Microbial community assembly and co-occurrence relationship in sediments of the river-dominated estuary and the adjacent shelf in the wet season

Meiqing Lu et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the co-occurrence relationship and microbial community assembly in the sediments along a large river-dominated estuary to shelf in the northern South China Sea. The results showed that stochastic processes, particularly homogenizing dispersal, dominated the community assembly in the estuarine ecosystem. River inflow and environmental heterogeneity were believed to be key factors regulating the microbial community assembly in the studied area.

Delineating E. coli occurrence and transport in the sandy beach groundwater system by radon-222

K. H. Cheng et al.

Summary: The occurrence and transport of E. coli in the sandy beach groundwater system can be delineated by Rn-222 due to their similar half-lives. The unique relationship between Rn-222 and E. coli provides critical context for microbial water quality assessments and ecosystem resilience. Furthermore, submarine groundwater discharge greatly impacts the net E. coli removal/production capacity.

Analytical study for wave-induced submarine groundwater discharge in subtidal zone

Summary: This study investigates the process of wave-induced submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). The results show that the loading effect decreases the head gradients between seawater and porewater, while wave-induced SGD generally increases with the aquifer's thickness and permeability.

Submarine groundwater discharge impacts on coastal nutrient biogeochemistry

Isaac R. Santos et al.

Summary: Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) plays a significant role in connecting terrestrial and marine systems by releasing nutrients into coastal waters. SGD-derived nitrogen inputs can alleviate nitrogen limitation in coastal ecosystems. Saline SGD is a widespread source of recycled nutrients to global coastal waters, while fresh SGD acts as a localized point source of new nutrients.
