Experimental investigation on the mechanical properties of thawed deep permafrost from the Kuparuk River Delta of the North Slope of Alaska

The results show that the elastic moduli and shear strength parameters of thawed permafrost do not follow the trend observed at typical unfrozen soil sites. Aufeis fields as novel groundwater-dependent ecosystems in the arctic cryosphere

A study along the Kuparuk River in arctic Alaska revealed a diverse groundwater invertebrate assemblage distributed below the sediment surface, with taxa richness comparable to surface sediments despite significant differences in community structure. This study demonstrates the existence of a rich and spatially extensive groundwater fauna in a region of continuous permafrost, suggesting widespread localized groundwater-dependent ecosystems in the Arctic.

How Much of the Earth's Surface is Underlain by Permafrost?

Summary: The commonly reported estimate that permafrost underlies a quarter of the Northern Hemisphere is actually an overstatement. Permafrost underlies approximately 15% of the Northern Hemisphere, which is about three times smaller than the commonly reported estimate. This commentary highlights possible reasons for this overestimation and provides permafrost area estimates for different parts of the globe.

Filling the Data Gaps Within GRACE Missions Using Singular Spectrum Analysis
