Failure Assessment of Embankment Dam Elements: Case Study of the Pirot Reservoir System

Dragan Rakic et al.

Summary: This paper presents a functionality investigation of key dam elements using finite element analysis. The study focuses on identifying weak points that could compromise the normal functioning of the dam, and carries out numerical analysis to determine their impact. The case study of the Zavoj dam in Serbia reveals that the overflow section is the most robust element, but the slope above the spillway may jeopardize its functioning.

Eco-hydrologic stability zonation of dams and power plants using the combined models of SMCE and CEQUALW2

Rouhallah Fatahi Nafchi et al.

Summary: This study focused on determining stable and instable eco-hydrologic regions in the study area by selecting factors affecting eco-hydrologic stability, preparing layers in GIS, weighting factors using analytic hierarchy process and pairwise comparisons, and integrating homogenous units to create a final map. The CEQUALW2 software was used to confirm data accuracy and perform water quality simulation in the studied dam, with pollutant source and water quality identified as the most important factors. The final map indicated unsuitable stability conditions in most areas at downstream reaches.

Laboratory investigation on erosion threshold shear stress of cohesive sediment in Karkheh Dam

Rouhallah Fatahi Nafchi et al.

Summary: This research focuses on understanding the dynamic behavior of fine-sticky sediments in the development and maintenance of reservoirs and water transfer networks for the Karkheh dam reservoir management. The results show that the concentration of eroded sediments is a function of time for the consolidation of reservoir sediment, and the duration of consolidation time is an effective factor on critical erosion shear stress. Erosion rate suggests an inverse relationship with the life of the settled sediments, indicating that the best flow shear stress for sediment removal from the Karkheh dam reservoir should be greater than 0.31 N/m(2).
