Aluminum-based electrocoagulation for residual fluoride removal during per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) wastewater treatment

Mingkun Zhang et al.

Summary: The Al-based electrocoagulation (EC) technique was optimized to effectively remove the residual F- during PFASs wastewater treatment, achieving over 81.7% removal efficiency within 30 minutes under the optimal operating conditions. The EC showed stable performance in removing F- across a wide range of pH and could form stable flocs under neutral pH conditions. The in-depth characterization of flocs revealed the dynamic change of Al-F species along the EC process and the removal mechanisms were confirmed to involve complexation, ion exchange, hydrogen bonding, and precipitation. The optimized EC also demonstrated stable removal efficiency of F- in the presence of multiple PFASs.

Comparison of Zn-Al and Mg-Al layered double hydroxides for adsorption of perfluorooctanoic acid

Jingwan Huo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of two types of LDH materials for the removal of PFAS, finding that Zn-Al LDH showed higher efficiency and better adsorption capacity for PFOA compared to Mg-Al LDH. The presence of natural organic matter had minimal impact on PFOA removal by Zn-Al LDH, while sulfate severely inhibited PFOA adsorption, suggesting that electrostatic interactions may play a primary role in the adsorption mechanism onto LDHs for PFAS removal.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in the environment

Marina G. Evich et al.

Summary: PFAS has become a symbol of environmental contamination, attracting public, scientific, and regulatory concern. These compounds are globally distributed through atmospheric and aqueous releases, and they accumulate in biota through multiple pathways. Efforts to remediate PFAS-contaminated matrices are still in their early stages, with a focus on research targeting drinking water.

A Critical Review on Transplacental Transfer of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances: Prenatal Exposure Levels, Characteristics, and Mechanisms

Donghui Ma et al.

Summary: This article provides a systematic overview of prenatal exposure levels and transplacental transfer mechanisms of PFASs worldwide. It summarizes the relationships between TTE values and structures of PFASs and discusses possible mechanisms for transplacental transfer, particularly the combination between PFASs and transporters. The study proposes machine learning as a superior method to predict and reveal the behaviors and mechanisms of transplacental transfer of PFASs.

Summary: According to the global monitoring plan, PFHxS was detected in 17% of the national samples and none in Brazil, while PFOA and PFOS had detection frequencies of 100% and 92%, respectively. Wealthier countries had higher PFOA concentrations. Some countries have achieved a 50% decrease in concentrations within ten years.

Enhanced sorption of perfluorooctanoic acid with organically functionalized layered double hydroxide

Xiaopeng Min et al.

Summary: This study reported the development of a series of new organically functionalized layered double hydroxide (LDH) adsorbents for the removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from contaminated water, with a specific focus on perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). The organically functionalized LDHs showed efficient PFOA adsorption by combining strong electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. The adsorption kinetics and capacities were found to be higher for the organically functionalized LDHs compared to the unmodified LDH. Additionally, the organically functionalized LDHs exhibited improved performance under various water chemistry conditions and remained effective after repeated adsorption-regeneration cycles. This work suggests that organically functionalized LDHs hold great promise for the treatment of PFAS-contaminated water.

Removal of perfluorooctanoic acid from water using peroxydisulfate/layered double hydroxide system: Optimization using response surface methodology and artificial neural network

Heejin Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, layered double hydroxide (LDH) was used as both an adsorbent and heterogeneous catalyst to remove perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). The optimal conditions for PFOA removal were determined, and the effect of scavengers on radical generation during the process was analyzed. The PDS/LDH system was found to be an effective solution for PFOA removal and process optimization through multi-parameter modeling.

Molecular-Level Insights on the Facet-Dependent Degradation of Perfluorooctanoic Acid

Wenhui Ding et al.

Summary: This study investigates the facet-dependence of interfacial interactions and oxidation during the PFOA degradation process, highlighting the role of {110} R-(3) over barc facet of hexagonal In2O3 in initiating hole-dominated degradation. The research shows that the defluorination rate is controlled by hole-dominated oxidation processes under UV irradiation, providing insights for the rational design of photocatalysts for superior decontamination efficiency.

Summary: PFAS are widely used in consumer and industrial applications worldwide, with monitoring studies in WWTPs mainly focused on China, Europe, and North America. Short and long-chain perfluoroalkyl acids are widely detected in WWTP influents and effluents, with most WWTPs exhibiting low removal efficiencies for PFAS and biodegradation being the primary mechanism for PFAS transformation in WWTPs.
