Anthropogenic landcover impacts fluvial dissolved organic matter composition in the Upper Mississippi River Basin

Derrick R. Vaughn et al.

Summary: Landcover changes have impacted the natural carbon cycle, with differences in dissolved organic carbon concentrations and molecular compositions in streams draining forest, agriculture, and urban landcovers. Forest and urban streams have higher DOC concentrations, while agricultural and urban streams show higher abundances of N-,S- heteroatomic formulae. The differences likely result from carbon sourcing, microbial processing, soil disturbance, and anthropogenic inputs.

Land Use Overrides Stream Order and Season in Driving Dissolved Organic Matter Dynamics Throughout the Year in a River Network

Ashley A. Coble et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic land use has altered the character and bioavailability of dissolved organic matter (DOM). This study found that land use has a greater influence than stream order on the variability of DOM characteristics and bioavailability throughout the year. Watersheds with less aromatic and more recently produced DOM, as well as more development and impervious surface, have greater bioavailability.

Molecular evidence for the export of terrigenous organic matter to the north Gulf of Mexico by solid-state 13C NMR and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry of humic acids

Sarah A. Ware et al.

Summary: By analyzing sediment samples from the Mississippi River Birdsfoot Delta to the Mississippi Canyon, it was found that terrigenous organic matter plays a crucial role in the export to the Gulf of Mexico. Condensed aromatics (CA) and carboxyl-containing aliphatic molecules (CCAM) are the main compounds present, showing variations in content at different distances offshore, indicating deposition of terrigenous organic matter in offshore sediments.

Enhanced chemodiversity, distinctive molecular signature and diurnal dynamics of dissolved organic matter in streams of two headwater catchments, Southeastern China

Chen Gong et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the chemical characteristics and spectral and mass spectrometry of DOM in headwater streams. The results showed that anthropogenic markers of sewage were higher in headwater streams compared to the main stream of the Changjiang River. In situ degradation experiments revealed a decrease in molecular weight and an increase in degradation products of DOM. The study emphasized the importance of identifying the sources and transformation processes of DOM in headwater streams for future drinking water treatment.

Amount and reactivity of dissolved organic matter export are affected by land cover change from old-growth to second-growth forests in headwater ecosystems

Timothy S. Fegel et al.

Summary: The study found that land cover change from old-growth forests to second-growth forests influences the characteristics and reactivity of dissolved organic matter (DOM). DOM exported from old-growth forests is more heterogeneous and aromatic, while proteinaceous and microbially processed DOM components are more prevalent in second-growth forests.
