A novel strategy to reduce trace element supplementation in the semi-solid anaerobic digestion with gradient ammonia concentration: the role of biochar

Yafan Cai et al.

Summary: Solid anaerobic digestion of chicken manure leads to VFAs accumulation. Addition of TEs helps stabilize the system but excessive supplementation causes pollution. This study explores the use of biochar to reduce TE addition. Results show that biochar reduces TE supplementation by 50% and increases the bioavailability of TEs. Biochar also enriches conductive microorganisms and beneficial bacteria. Overall, biochar is an ideal material for reducing TE amounts in anaerobic digestion systems.

Bioaugmentation with well-constructed consortia can effectively alleviate ammonia inhibition of practical manure anaerobic digestion

Ziyi Yang et al.

Summary: Bioaugmentation using well-constructed consortia can significantly improve methane production in anaerobic digestion. The effectiveness of bioaugmentation mainly depends on the composition of the added consortia. Well-constructed consortia can stimulate acetogenesis and methanogenesis steps, leading to a higher methane production increment. Key functional enzymes such as glycine hydroxymethyltransferase and phosphoglycerate mutase may play a critical role in the bioaugmented anaerobic digestion system.

Thermodynamics of volatile fatty acid degradation during anaerobic digestion under organic overload stress: The potential to better identify process stability

Di Wu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that organic overload stress in anaerobic digestion (AD) leads to accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs), decreased methane yield, slower methane production kinetics, and process instability. Thermodynamic analysis shows that moderate organic overload stress only retards the degradation of VFAs without adverse effects. This study provides novel insights into the thermodynamic mechanisms of VFA degradation and has important implications for improving the diagnostic mode for AD process stability.

A review of process parameters influence in solid-state anaerobic digestion: Focus on performance stability thresholds

A. Ajayi-Banji et al.

Summary: Process parameters such as pH, ammonia, and volatile fatty acids are important indicators of stress level, reactor performance, and methane yield in solid-state anaerobic digestion (SSAD). This review examines SSAD literature from the past twenty-one years and identifies process parameter thresholds for SSAD. The review discusses the strengths and limitations of these parameters in optimizing SSAD performance. In summary, to minimize acid inhibition in the SSAD reactor, it is recommended to avoid VFA/Alk >1.5, maintain a pH within 7.5-8.3 to optimize methanogens activities, and avoid ammonia concentration >9.0 g/L which could disrupt archaea activities. Additionally, an initial C/N ratio between 10 and 29 is likely to avoid inhibition and ensure successful SSAD.
