Enhanced removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in complex matrices by polyDADMAC-coated regenerable granular activated carbon

Pia Ramos et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that modifying granular activated carbon (GAC) with cationic polymer poly dia-llyldimethylammonium chloride (polyDADMAC) enhances its adsorption capacity for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). The modified GAC shows effective adsorption even in the presence of competing ions. Additionally, low-power ultrasound can be used to desorb PFASs from the polyDADMAC-GAC, making it a regenerable adsorbent.

The association between blood PFAS concentrations and clinical biochemical measures of organ function and metabolism in participants of the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS)

Sabit Cakmak et al.

Summary: This study examined the association between six PFAS and organ and metabolic function. The results showed that exposure to selected PFAS is associated with clinical blood tests reflecting metabolism and the function of several organ systems. These relatively small changes may possibly indicate early pathology that is clinically inapparent and may possibly be of significance in a general population or in individuals exposed to very high levels of PFAS.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure in women seeking in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer treatment (IVF-ET) in China: Blood-follicular transfer and associations with IVF-ET outcomes

Aobo Hong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the exposure of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in women receiving in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) treatment and explored the potential associations between PFAS exposure and IVF-ET outcomes. The results revealed the presence of PFAS in both serum and follicular fluid. PFAS showed a high tendency to cross the blood-follicle barrier and the transfer efficiency varied with their physicochemical properties and molecular structures. Although no clear pattern was found between PFAS concentrations and IVF-ET outcomes, the study highlights the importance of understanding environmental chemical exposure in follicular fluid and its potential influence on reproductive health.

Target and suspect screening of 4777 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in river water, wastewater, groundwater and biota samples in the Danube River Basin

Kelsey Ng et al.

Summary: The occurrence of 4777 PFAS was investigated in the Danube River Basin, and 82 PFAS were detected in various environmental samples. Suspect screening detected more PFAS than target screening, and risk characterization indicated that at least 18 PFAS pose an environmental risk.

What is specific in adsorption of perfluoroalkyl acids on carbon materials?

Navid Saeidi et al.

Summary: The study found that chemical modification of activated carbon materials through amino-functionalization and thermal defunctionalization can significantly enhance the adsorption of PFOA and other PFAAs, with a focus on the importance of electrostatic interactions and charge compensation for PFAAs. The results contribute to the optimized selection of adsorbents for PFAA adsorption from water.

Spatial Trends of Anionic, Zwitterionic, and Cationic PFASs at an AFFF-Impacted Site

Anastasia Nickerson et al.

Summary: This study sampled and analyzed soil and groundwater from an AFFF-impacted site, finding that PFAS concentrations were generally higher at depth than near the surface. In FTA soil, zwitterionic and cationic compounds were the major components of total PFAS mass. The composition of PFAS class, chain length, and structural isomers changed with depth and distance from the FTA, suggesting in situ transformation and differential transport.

Per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) as a contaminant of emerging concern in surface water: A transboundary review of their occurrences and toxicity effects

Aditi Podder et al.

Summary: PFAS have been recognized as emerging contaminants by the US EPA, leading to advisory guidelines worldwide aimed at limiting their occurrences in aquatic environments, especially for PFOS and PFOA. Studies have shown that PFOA and PFOS concentrations in many surface water matrices exceed the US EPA health advisory level for lifetime exposure from drinking water.

Adsorption of polar and ionic organic compounds on activated carbon: Surface chemistry matters

Jieying Zhou et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of surface modifications of activated carbon felts on the adsorption efficiency of persistent and mobile organic compounds (PMOCs). It was found that defunctionalized activated carbon felts with net positive surface charge at neutral pH showed the most versatile sorption efficiency. Ion exchange capacity was recognized as a key property for evaluating adsorbents aiming at PMOC adsorption.

Micropore Analysis of Biomass Chars by CO2 Adsorption: Comparsion of Different Analysis Methods

Carsten Wedler et al.

Summary: Detailed knowledge of pore structure evolution of fuel chars is essential for a sound description of the conversion process. N-2 adsorption is standard for pore analysis, while CO2 adsorption is more suitable for micropore analysis as it shows no limitation with regard to diffusion. Despite various analysis methods for CO2 adsorption data, no consistent method has been established in the literature for determining micropore volume and surface area.

Mechanistic insights into fast adsorption of perfluoroalkyl substances on carbonate-layered double hydroxides

Yun Chen et al.

Summary: CuMgFe-LDH was prepared as an adsorbent for fast adsorption of PFOS and PFOA, primarily driven by hydrophobic interactions. While PFOA adsorption was suppressed under alkaline conditions, PFOS uptake was only slightly affected, indicating the significant role of electrostatic interactions for PFOA adsorption. The adsorption of PFOS and PFOA was insensitive to competition by monovalent anions, and spent CuMgFe-LDH could be easily regenerated for subsequent usage cycles.
