Characterizing the exposure of streams in southern Ontario to agricultural pesticides

Melanie Raby et al.

Summary: This study characterized pesticide exposure to aquatic communities by analyzing streamwater samples from agricultural areas in southwestern Ontario, Canada. Various pesticides were detected in the samples, including herbicides and neonicotinoid insecticides. The study found associations between pesticide concentrations and upstream land use and crop type, and overall low potential toxicity to aquatic communities. However, certain pesticides may pose a toxicity risk to aquatic invertebrates.

Phytoremediation of azoxystrobin and imidacloprid by wetland plant species Juncus effusus, Pontederia cordata and Sagittaria latifolia

Alayne M. McKnight et al.

Summary: The study found that wetland plants such as P. cordata were more effective at reducing azoxystrobin, while S. latifolia showed greater reduction in imidacloprid levels. Additionally, a list of plant species suitable for phytoremediation of common pesticides in the southeastern United States and similar areas was initiated in this study.

Polluted paradise: Occurrence of pesticide residues within the urban coastal zones of Santa Cruz and Isabela (Galapagos, Ecuador)

Lenin Riascos-Flores et al.

Summary: The study revealed the presence of multiple pesticide residues in the coastal waters of urban areas in the Galapagos Islands, with Santa Cruz island having higher diversity and concentration compared to Isabela island. Repetitions in sampling locations showed significant spatial and temporal variations in pesticide residue concentrations. Evaluation indicated relatively high risk posed by certain pesticides to specific biotic groups.

The effect of agricultural intensification and water-locking on the world's largest coastal lagoonal system

C. Bueno et al.

Summary: The human impacts on Mirim Lagoon from historical to modern times have led to a transition from brackish to freshwater conditions, increased nitrogen and carbon levels, and the presence of microplastics. Advances in agricultural technologies post-1990s, such as increased nutrient levels and soybean cultivation, have further affected the environmental quality of the system. The detection of microplastics in sediments since the early 1990s indicates an anthropogenically impacted scenario.

Matheus B. Martins et al.

Summary: A survey conducted in rice paddies in Rio Grande do Sul state in 2002 reported the occurrence of nine species of jointvetch. Four species of Aeschynomene were found in rice fields in RS, with escapes potentially due to farmers' focus on controlling weedy grasses in their management practices.

Determination of atrazine and main metabolites in natural waters based on a simple method of QuEChERS and liquid chromatography coupled to a diode-array detector

Renata P. Gabardo et al.

Summary: This study aims to establish a method for determining atrazine and its degradation byproducts in surface water samples, which was successfully applied in the analysis of natural waters from the Parana 3 River Basin in a region with large soybean and corn production. The method was proven to be efficient in cleaning up samples from rivers with a strong impact of anthropic activity.

Pesticides in US Rivers: Regional differences in use, occurrence, and environmental toxicity, 2013 to 2017

Sarah M. Stackpoole et al.

Summary: Pesticides pose a threat to the environment, with the majority of use related to agriculture. Analyzing samples from 74 river sites in the conterminous US, the study found significantly higher pesticide use and detection numbers in the Midwest, while potential toxicity results were more evenly distributed. Continued monitoring is needed to improve understanding of pesticide effects on aquatic and human life.

Monitoring Water Quality in Lien Son Irrigation System of Vietnam and Identification of Potential Pollution Sources by Using Multivariate Analysis

Bui Quoc Lap et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the water quality of the Lien Son irrigation system in Vietnam and identify the critical pollutants affecting the system, with domestic wastewaters and agricultural runoff being primary pollution sources. Urgent actions are recommended to control these sources and maintain the water quality of the system.

Passive sampling with suspect screening of polar pesticides and multivariate analysis in river catchments: Informing environmental risk assessments and designing future monitoring programmes

Adam C. Taylor et al.

Summary: This study focused on the pollution of surface water by polar pesticides in river catchments, developing a novel strategy using passive sampling coupled to suspect screening and multivariate analysis. A total of 128 different classes of pesticides were identified using high-resolution liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Statistical analysis revealed pesticide sources and fate, prioritizing 61 pesticides for risk assessment and designing a seasonal monitoring program. Incorporating passive sampling coupled to suspect screening into regulatory monitoring could better inform water quality management practices and reduce operational costs.

Tielong Wang et al.

Summary: This study conducted monitoring and risk assessment of current-use pesticides in surface water from the northwestern section of the Taihu Lake Basin in China in 2019. A total of 114 pesticides were detected, with significantly higher number and concentration of pesticides in the wet season compared to the dry season, and more contamination observed in agricultural areas than residential and industrial areas.

Seasonal distribution of multiclass pesticide residues in the surface waters of northwest Croatia

Sanja Fingler et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the incidence and mass concentrations of multiclass pesticide residues in water samples collected in urban and agricultural areas of northwest Croatia. Herbicide residues were more common and had higher concentrations compared to insecticide residues. Continued monitoring of surface waters and possibly expanding the list of priority pollutants is strongly recommended based on the findings.

Effects of low molecular weight organic acids on adsorption of quinclorac by sepiolite

Lihua Yang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) on the adsorption of quinclorac by sepiolite. It was found that different types of LMWOAs had varying impacts on the adsorption process, with some causing inhibition and others stimulation. The adsorption isotherms in the presence of LMWOAs were better described by Freundlich and linear models. Additionally, interactions involving competition, electrostatic attraction, bridging action, and hydrogen bonding were identified as mechanisms through which LMWOAs affect quinclorac adsorption.
