Adsorption and photodegradation of reactive red 120 with nickel-iron-layered double hydroxide/biochar composites

Yidan Luo et al.

Summary: A series of NiFe-LDH/biochar (NiFe/BC) composites were fabricated for the removal of anionic dyes from wastewater. The addition of biochar improved the adsorption capacity and photocatalytic ability of NiFe-LDH, with the optimized NiFe/BC2 composite achieving a removal rate of 88.5% under visible light. The photodegradation kinetic constant of NiFe/BC2 was significantly higher than that of NiFe-LDH and biochar.

Impact of Reaction Parameters and Water Matrices on the Removal of Organic Pollutants by TiO2/LED and ZnO/LED Heterogeneous Photocatalysis Using 365 and 398 nm Radiation

Mate Nafradi et al.

Summary: This study compares the application of high-power LED365nm and commercial, low-price LED398nm for heterogeneous photocatalysis with TiO2 and ZnO photocatalysts. The effects of light intensity, photon energy, quantum yield, electrical energy consumption, and matrices and inorganic components on radical formation were investigated. The results show that LED398nm has slower COU conversion rate compared to LED365nm, but significantly higher r(0)(7-HC)/r(0)(COU) ratio. The impact of matrices and inorganic components on the photocatalytic reaction differs for ZnO and TiO2.

Reclamation of aqueous waste solutions polluted with pharmaceutical and pesticide residues by biological-photocatalytic (solar) coupling in situ for agricultural reuse

G. Perez-Lucas et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the detoxification of aqueous waste solutions polluted with emerging pharmaceuticals and pesticides using a coupled biological-photocatalytic facility under natural sunlight. The results showed that pharmaceutical residues were effectively removed during the biological treatment process, while the biodegradation of pesticides was less effective. However, all compounds were rapidly degraded during the photocatalytic treatment process. Solar heterogeneous photocatalysis could be a promising technology for tertiary treatment in wastewater treatment plants, particularly in arid areas with water scarcity and ample sunlight.

Mobility of insecticide residues and main intermediates in a clay-loam soil, and impact of leachate components on their photocatalytic degradation

Marina Aliste et al.

Summary: The study assessed the behavior of four insecticides and their reaction intermediates in a clayloam textured soil. It found that thiametoxam and imidacloprid were more mobile and easily recovered from leachates, while pirimicarb and chlorantraniliprole were classified as immobile. Photocatalytic treatment showed fast degradation rates for thiametoxam and imidacloprid, influenced by the water matrix composition.

Emerging Contaminants: An Overview of Recent Trends for Their Treatment and Management Using Light-Driven Processes

Brandon Chuan Yee Lee et al.

Summary: The management of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in water bodies is challenging due to detection difficulty and recalcitrant degradation. Various light-driven oxidation processes were discussed, with a focus on overcoming limitations and recent innovations. Cost-benefit analysis suggested the solar/Fenton process has the lowest energy consumption and potential for further development.

Emerging contaminants in wastewater: A critical review on occurrence, existing legislations, risk assessment, and sustainable treatment alternatives

Vishal Kumar Parida et al.

Summary: The review provides a comprehensive assessment of the occurrence, ecotoxicological effects, and treatment methods of emerging contaminants. It compares statutory guidelines with calculated drinking water equivalent limits and conducts a risk assessment analysis highlighting substances like caffeine, bisphenol-A, diazinon, and malathion with high risk quotients. The study evaluates the performance of different treatment technologies in reducing the concentration of contaminants below established guidelines, with advanced hybrid methods showing promising results.
