A new tetra-segmented splipalmivirus with divided RdRP domains from Cryphonectria naterciae, a fungus found on chestnut and cork oak trees in Europe

Yukiyo Sato et al.

Summary: This study molecularly characterized a new splipalmivirus (CnSpV1) and a novel fusagravirus (CnFGV1) in Cryphonectria naterciae, shedding light on the molecular and biological properties of these viruses. The tetra-segmented nature of CnSpV1 and its narrow host range restricted to C. naterciae and C. carpinicola were confirmed in this study.

Genome Characterization and Phylogenetic Analysis of a Novel Endornavirus That Infects Fungal Pathogen Sclerotinia sclerotiorum

Xin Luo et al.

Summary: This study identified and characterized a novel endornavirus SsEV11 infecting the fungal pathogen S. sclerotiorum, and proposed the establishment of a new genus Gammaendornavirus to accommodate endorna-like viruses in Cluster III. The phylogenetic analysis revealed significant diversity among endornaviruses and their close relationship to Betaendornavirus.

Discovery of divided RdRp sequences and a hitherto unknown genomic complexity in fungal viruses

Yuto Chiba et al.

Summary: Cutting-edge metagenome technology has the potential to reshape current concepts about the evolution of RNA viruses by identifying variations in viral RNA genomes. However, the technology may not properly process low-homology genomic regions, leading to underestimation of true viral diversity. By applying the advanced FLDS method, researchers were able to screen and catalog RNA viruses infecting fungal isolates, revealing hidden diversity, novel genome architectures, and prompting reconsideration of RdRp structural plasticity.
