Cohesion properties and fracture toughness of Fe/W interfaces with additions of Re and Cr

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: Research found that at the Fe/W interface, Re prefers to be at the Fe position, and the addition of Re increases cohesion strength and fracture toughness, while Cr causes unstable changes.

Probabilistic analysis of cleavage fracture in commercial polycrystalline tungsten

Mathias Jetter et al.

Summary: Polycrystalline tungsten is a promising candidate for plasma-facing armour material in future fusion reactors. Below the DBTT, tungsten exhibits brittle or semi-brittle behavior, with little to no plastic deformation before cleavage fracture. Additionally, tungsten has low fracture toughness and significant scattering in strength properties. Statistical treatment of strength values is required, and four-point bending tests were conducted in the temperature range of room temperature to 400 degrees C to enable Weibull and Beremin analyses. Finite element simulations support the analyses, and Weibull and Beremin parameter values are determined from the simulation results.

Cohesion properties and irradiation tolerance of W-Fe graded interfaces from molecular dynamics simulation

Liang Chen et al.

Summary: This study aims to construct W-Fe graded interfaces with excellent interface cohesion and irradiation resistance. The adhesion and fracture toughness of various W-Fe graded bilayers are systematically explored, and the results indicate that a higher number of W-rich layers should be designed to achieve higher strength and superior fracture toughness. Additionally, the addition of Fe in the W-rich side and the addition of W in the Fe-rich side can both enhance the irradiation resistance in terms of mechanical properties. However, the additive composition in the Fe-rich side is significantly larger than that in the W-rich side. Based on the interface strength, fracture toughness, and irradiation tolerance, a graded structure design of W90Fe10/W75Fe25 /W6(0)Fe(40)/W40Fe60/W25Fe75 is suggested from a theoretical perspective.

Evaluation of structural and mechanical strength of symmetric tilt interface in W/Fe composite laminate using molecular dynamics

Juan Ding et al.

Summary: In this study, a W/Fe composite laminate is constructed using a symmetric tilt interface relationship. The performance of the newly built W/Fe symmetric tilt interfaces is evaluated and compared with other boundaries. The results show that some of the W/Fe symmetric tilt interfaces have comparable interface energy and better mechanical properties than expected.

Tungsten-steel composites and FGMs prepared by argon-shrouded plasma spraying

J. Matejicek et al.

Summary: Tungsten-steel composites and functionally graded materials were prepared using a high power hybrid water-argon plasma spraying system to reduce stress concentration at the interface. Optimized parameters were selected based on comprehensive characterization, and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) was explored to improve the density and thermal conductivity of the coatings.

Suppressing irradiation induced grain growth and defect accumulation in nanocrystalline tungsten through grain boundary doping

W. Streit Cunningham et al.

Summary: The study investigates the role of dopants in controlling defect annihilation behavior in nanocrystalline W alloy, with titanium stabilizing the nanostructure against irradiation induced grain growth. The findings suggest that titanium enhances the grain boundary sink strength for defects through transient stages of accumulation and recovery.

In-situ TEM investigation of 30 keV he+ irradiated tungsten: Effects of temperature, fluence, and sample thickness on dislocation loop evolution

Yipeng Li et al.

Summary: In situ irradiations on tungsten revealed that pre-existing dislocation lines have a profound effect on the size, density and Burgers vector of dislocation loops. The interaction between high density helium clusters can stimulate the formation of <100> loops, while the reaction of two 1/2<111> loop variants driven by long-time and elevated temperature irradiation is also a driving force for <100> loop formation.
