Effects of shot peening with different coverage on surface integrity and fatigue crack growth properties of 7B50-T7751 aluminum alloy

Zhi Qin et al.

Summary: This study reviews the effect of shot peening coverage on the surface integrity and fatigue crack growth properties of an aluminum alloy. The results show that shot peening treatment improves surface roughness, increases microhardness, and induces compressive residual stresses. The coverage of shot peening has a limited effect on fatigue crack growth rate, with the lowest rate observed at 300% coverage.

Understanding the nanostructure evolution and the mechanical strengthening of the M50 bearing steel during ultrasonic shot peening

Xiong Yue et al.

Summary: Ultrasonic shot peening (USP) technology was used to surface nanocrystallize high-strength M50 bearing steel at room temperature. The thickness of the lath martensite in M50 steel was found to be refined to 10 nm. The nanohardness of the nanostructured M50 was significantly higher (38%) than that of the as-received matrix materials. Microstructure evolution and grain refinement mechanisms were investigated, revealing the transformation of low angle grain boundaries to high angle grain boundaries and the formation of ultrafine equiaxed grains. The decomposition of carbides during grain refinement was also observed.

Xuekun Luo et al.

Summary: A dislocation-gradient microstructure layer with large depth and high compressive residual stress (CRS) value was successfully processed on the surface of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy by laser shock peening and subsequent shot peening (LSP + SP). The investigation revealed that the dislocation-gradient microstructure layer can improve the fatigue properties of the material and involves a synergistic strengthening mechanism.

Wojciech Macek et al.

Summary: This paper studies the effect of asynchronous axial-torsional strain-controlled loading histories on the fracture surface behavior of thin-walled tubular austenitic steel specimens. The results show that the multiaxial loading path significantly affects the surface topography and a fatigue damage model has been developed to estimate the fatigue lifetime.

Examination of inverse Hall-Petch relation in nanostructured aluminum alloys by ultra-severe plastic deformation

Abbas Mohammadi et al.

Summary: The study achieved nanograin sizes in an Al-La-Ce alloy through ultra-SPD followed by aging, and identified two breaks in the Hall-Petch relationship. Detailed analysis confirmed that nanograin formation alone is not sufficient for extra hardening, and additional strategies such as grain-boundary segregation and precipitation are necessary to address the issue of softening.
