The continued development of multilayered and compositionally modulated electrodeposits

F. C. Walsh

Summary: Electrodeposition of alternate layers offers numerous benefits such as reduced wear, improved corrosion resistance, and higher tensile strength. These layers can involve different morphology, thickness, metal composition, or the inclusion of particles. The growing field of multilayer electrodeposition has utilized contemporary trends in electroplating research, including self-assembled layers, nanowire arrays, and deep eutectic solvents for electrolytes. The applications of multilayer deposits span various industries and specialties, from wear and corrosion resistant coatings to electronic and magnetic materials.

Development of continuous compositional gradient Ni-W coatings utilizing electrodeposition for superior wear resistance under sliding contact

Lavakumar Bathini et al.

Summary: In this study, a modified ammonia-citrate bath was used to deposit nanocrystalline Ni-W coatings with a continuous compositional gradient. It was found that the concentration of ammonium chloride affected the compositional gradient profile in the coatings. By optimizing the concentration of ammonium chloride, gradient Ni-W coatings with linear compositional variation were obtained. These gradient coatings showed lower residual stresses and superior scratch resistance compared to homogeneous coatings.

Enhancing co-deformation ability of nanograined Ni-W layers in the Ni/Ni-W laminated composites

Fei Liang et al.

Summary: The tensile properties and plastic deformation behavior of Ni/Ni-W laminated composites were investigated with different thickness ratios of the Ni layer to the Ni-W layer. Increasing the thickness ratio improved the strength/ductility synergy due to enhanced co-deformation ability of nanograined Ni-W layers. Thinning of Ni-W layers with small original thickness was achieved through stable grain boundary sliding under interface constraint, leading to a transition in fracture behavior as the Ni-W layer thickness decreased.
