Estimation of the global prevalence of dementia in 2019 and forecasted prevalence in 2050: an analysis for the Global Burden of Disease 2019

Emma Nichols et al.

Summary: With projected trends in population ageing and growth, the number of people with dementia is expected to increase. Understanding the distribution and magnitude of anticipated growth is crucial for public health planning and resource prioritization, with a focus on potentially modifiable risk factors.

DALY Estimation Approaches: Understanding and Using the Incidence-based Approach and the Prevalence-based Approach

Young-Eun Kim et al.

Summary: Disability-adjusted life-year (DALY) estimates can vary due to various factors, and there are three approaches to DALY estimation. The Global Burden of Disease studies switched to using the hybrid approach, while the National Burden of Disease studies in Korea still mainly use the incidence-based approach. More DALY studies using the prevalence-based approach need to be conducted in Korea for comparability with international studies. However, it is necessary to conduct more research using a disease classification system suitable for Korea and establish more detailed and valid data sources.

Genetic risk factors have a substantial impact on healthy life years

Sakari Jukarainen et al.

Summary: This study introduced an approach to estimate the impact of genetic risk factors on healthy life years and found that rare variants had the highest effect on DALYs at the individual level, and the impact of some common variants was comparable to modifiable risk factors. Genetic risk factors had varying effects on males and females.
