hsa_circ_0000231 Promotes colorectal cancer cell growth through upregulation of CCND2 by IGF2BP3/miR-375 dual pathway

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that hsa_circ_0000231 was upregulated in colorectal cancer (CRC) and associated with poor prognosis. Inhibition of hsa_circ_0000231 suppressed CRC cell proliferation and tumorigenesis. Hsa_circ_0003258 promotes prostate cancer metastasis by complexing with IGF2BP3 and sponging miR-653-5p

Yu-Zhong Yu et al.

Summary: Hsa_circ_0003258 is upregulated in prostate cancer and associated with tumor progression. It promotes cell migration and tumor metastasis, while knockdown of hsa_circ_0003258 has the opposite effect. Mechanistically, hsa_circ_0003258 functions by sponging miR-653-5p and increasing the expression of ARHGAP5. Additionally, hsa_circ_0003258 physically binds to IGF2BP3 and enhances HDAC4 mRNA stability, activating the ERK signaling pathway and triggering EMT programming.

Circular RNA PLCE1 promotes epithelial mesenchymal transformation, glycolysis in colorectal cancer and M2 polarization of tumor-associated macrophages

Bo Yi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the biological functions of circPLCE1 on epithelial mesenchymal transformation (EMT), glycolysis, and tumor-associated macrophage (TAM) polarization in colorectal cancer (CRC). The results showed that circPLCE1 expression was increased, while miR-485-5p expression was decreased in CRC. Knockdown of circPLCE1 inhibited CRC proliferation, glycolysis, and M2 macrophage polarization, while decreased miR-485-5p accelerated EMT, glycolysis, and TAM M2 polarization in CRC. Mechanism studies revealed that circPLCE1 acted as a competitive endogenous RNA to mediate ACTG1 expression through binding with miR-485-5p. In summary, circPLCE1 promotes EMT, glycolysis, and TAM M2 polarization through regulating the miR-485-5p/ACTG1 axis in CRC.

Emerging roles of circular RNAs in gastric cancer metastasis and drug resistance

Xiaolin Wang et al.

Summary: Gastric cancer is an aggressive malignancy with a high mortality rate primarily caused by metastatic lesions. Recent studies have shown that covalently closed circular RNAs (circRNAs) play crucial roles in gastric cancer, exhibiting dysregulated patterns in invasion and metastasis. However, the specific functions of circRNAs in metastatic gastric cancer remain unclear. This review outlines the functional circRNAs related to metastatic gastric cancer and drug resistance, providing insights into their underlying mechanisms and potential for future therapeutic interventions.

Role of circular RNAs in the diagnosis, regulation of drug resistance and prognosis of lung cancer

Chengpeng Sang et al.

Summary: Lung cancer is a common malignant tumor in China, causing high mortality rates in both urban and rural areas. Many lung cancer patients lack early symptoms, leading to late-stage diagnosis and poor prognosis. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) show potential as biomarkers for early diagnosis and prognosis prediction of lung cancer, as well as novel targets for therapy design.

Xiaozhu Tang et al.

Summary: circRNAs are a class of interesting and conserved single-stranded RNA molecules that play important roles in various biological processes, especially in microRNA sponges, gene splicing and transcription regulation, RNA-binding protein sponges, and protein/peptide translation. They are involved in various human diseases, particularly cancers, and may serve as better predictive biomarkers and therapeutic targets for cancer treatment.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
