Development of the hydrophilic additive by suspension copolymerisation of methacrylic acid with isodecyl methacrylate for easy-to-clean coatings

P. B. Bamane et al.

Summary: Achieving easy cleanability by using hydrophilic additive is an imminent perspective. In this study, easy cleanability to coating was induced by the incorporation of hydrophilic additives. The additives were synthesized using the suspension copolymerization of hydrophilic methacrylic acid (MAA) with hydrophobic isodecyl methacrylate (IDMA) monomer at different weight ratio. The prepared additive p(MAA-co-IDMA) was characterized and evaluated for its properties, and p(MAA) showed better functional, dimensional, and thermal property. The p(MAA) was then incorporated into the water-based binder, and the resulting coating sample with 0.5 phr p(MAA) showed better hydrophilicity and easy-cleaning property than others.
