Recent Advances of Point-of-Care Devices Integrated with Molecularly Imprinted Polymers-Based Biosensors: From Biomolecule Sensing Design to Intraoral Fluid Testing

Rowoon Park et al.

Summary: The recent advancements in point-of-care testing (POCT) and in vitro diagnostic medical devices have allowed for rapid access to analytical capabilities and reliable diagnostic results near or at the patient's location. However, reliable diagnosis remains a challenge in actual clinical trials and making clinical decisions. The introduction of novel molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) systems as artificial bioreceptors for POCT devices has the potential to improve the analytical performance and stability in harsh environments. This review explores the potential use of MIP-based biorecognition systems as custom artificial receptors with high selectivity and chemical affinity for specific molecules. Further developments and perspectives for high expandability in MIP-based periodontal diagnosis and wearable MIP-based biosensors are discussed.

Increased epithelial galectin-13 expression associates with eosinophilic airway inflammation in asthma

Lingling Yi et al.

Summary: Galectin-13 expression is significantly increased in asthma patients and is correlated with eosinophilic airway inflammation and Th2 signature genes. Inhaled corticosteroid treatment can reduce plasma galectin-13 levels, and galectin-13 may contribute to allergic airway eosinophilic inflammation by upregulating the expression of certain cytokines. Plasma galectin-13 levels may serve as a useful predictor for responses to ICS treatment.

Switchable synthesis of glycosyl selenides or diselenides with direct use of selenium as the selenating agent

Alfonso Iadonisi et al.

Summary: Symmetrical diglycosyl-selenides or diselenides can be prepared with high chemoselectivity by using elementary selenium and glycosyl iodides as reactants. The presence of triethyl phosphite and the stoichiometric ratio of sodium borohydride to selenium are critical factors in determining the selectivity of the synthesis. The strategy has been extended to the synthesis of unsymmetrical diglycosyl selenides, and preliminary biological experiments have shown potential antiproliferative effects of galactosyl diselenide.
