Differential pulse oximetry readings between ethnic groups and delayed transfer to intensive care units

C. J. Crooks et al.

Summary: This study suggests that patients with pigmented skin may have more severe illness at the time of transfer to intensive care units (ICUs) and lower oxygen saturations in Indian/Pakistani and Black/Mixed ethnic groups. These findings have implications for healthcare and health outcomes across ethnic groups globally.

You're on mute! Does pediatric CF home spirometry require physiologist supervision?

Emma Fettes et al.

Summary: The study suggests that home spirometry in children should ideally be remotely supervised by a physiologist to improve technical quality, but acceptable results can be achieved if training is delivered and results are monitored according to the protocol.

Digital toots for remote monitoring of asthma patients: Gadgets or revolution?

D. Drummond

Summary: Digital tools in asthma treatment and management, such as mobile applications and connected devices, are gaining popularity. These tools enable remote monitoring, data collection from patients' homes, and early intervention by healthcare professionals. This review discusses the theoretical rationale for using these tools, presents different types of digital tools, and shares the results of randomized trials comparing digital tools with traditional management. Limitations and future perspectives for digital ecosystems in asthma are also discussed.

SARS-CoV-2 environmental contamination from hospitalised patients with COVID-19 receiving aerosol-generating procedures

Rebecca L. Winslow et al.

Summary: The study found that the use of CPAP and HFNO in treating COVID-19 patients did not result in higher levels of air or surface viral contamination compared to the use of supplemental oxygen. This suggests that the risk of viral transmission to healthcare workers and patients is not significantly increased when using CPAP and HFNO.

Investigating primary healthcare practitioners' barriers and enablers to referral of patients with COPD to pulmonary rehabilitation: a mixed-methods study using the Theoretical Domains Framework

Jane Suzanne Watson et al.

Summary: This study used mixed-methods research to explore the referral of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to pulmonary rehabilitation (PR). The results revealed several barriers and enablers to PR referral, with barriers outweighing enablers. The findings suggest the need for targeted interventions to overcome these barriers and strengthen the enablers, in order to increase the referral of COPD patients to PR.

Air pollution induces Staphylococcus aureus USA300 respiratory tract colonization mediated by specific bacterial genetic responses involving the global virulence gene regulators Agr and Sae

Jo Purves et al.

Summary: Exposure to particulate matter, especially black carbon, can increase bacterial colonization and virulence factor expression in Staphylococcus aureus, leading to enhanced respiratory tract colonization and pulmonary invasion in vivo, as well as cell adhesion and invasion in vitro. This study uncovers previously unrecognized causative mechanisms of air pollution-associated infection, highlighting the direct impact of particulate matter on bacteria.

Bronchoscopic needle-based confocal laser endomicroscopy (nCLE) as a real-time detection tool for peripheral lung cancer

Tess Kramer et al.

Summary: Bronchoscopic nCLE imaging of suspected peripheral lung cancer is feasible and safe, allowing real-time detection of lung cancer and accurate differentiation between malignancy and airway/lung parenchyma. Blinded raters showed high accuracy in distinguishing nCLE videos of lung tumors, indicating the potential of nCLE imaging as a real-time guidance tool.

A human fetal lung cell atlas uncovers proximal-distal gradients of differentiation and key regulators of epithelial fates

Peng He et al.

Summary: This study presents a multiomic cell atlas of human lung development, combining single-cell RNA and ATAC sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, and single-cell imaging. It identifies previously uncharacterized cell states and validates predictions about cell-cell signaling and transcription factor hierarchies using organoid models.

Repurposed Antiviral Drugs for Covid-19-Interim WHO Solidarity Trial Results

Summary: The authors of the study reported the interim results of using four repurposed antiviral drugs (remdesivir, hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir, and interferon beta-1a) in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The study showed that these drug regimens had little or no effect on overall mortality, initiation of ventilation, and duration of hospital stay.

Association between lung function of school age children and short-term exposure to air pollution and pollen: the PARIS cohort

Helene Amazouz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between short-term exposure to pollen and air pollution and lung function in school-age children from a French population-based birth cohort. The results showed that exposure to pollen and air pollution could adversely affect lung function in children, especially those with asthma. Additionally, there appeared to be a joint effect of grass pollen and air pollution on lung function.

Shared genetic etiology between idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and COVID-19 severity

Joao Fadista et al.

Summary: There is a positive genetic correlation between IPF and COVID-19 severity, but the causal relationship between IPF and COVID-19 severity is not clear. However, one specific IPF risk gene shows a causal effect on COVID-19 severity, while another IPF risk gene appears to have a protective effect against COVID-19 hospitalization in older adults.
