Towards standardized nuclear reactors: Seismic isolation and the cost impact of the earthquake load case

Kaivalya M. Lal et al.

Summary: Nuclear energy is crucial for global decarbonization, but the high capital and time costs associated with designing and constructing nuclear power plants hinder their widespread deployment. The seismic load case is a significant cost driver in plant design, and seismic base isolation could greatly reduce earthquake response. However, its financial impact is still unknown, making it difficult to quantify the benefits of seismic isolation. This study shows that seismic isolation can significantly reduce the capital cost of safety-related equipment, especially with standardized equipment.

Vibration analysis of functionally graded porous cylindrical shells filled with dense fluid using an energy method

Jinpeng Su et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel energy approach for fully coupled fluid-structure problems of functionally graded porous fluid-filled cylindrical shells under arbitrary boundary conditions. The approach successfully introduces fluid-structure interactions and demonstrates good convergence, high accuracy, superior efficiency, and flexibility. The results show the method's applicability in various situations and its advantages over other methods in terms of accuracy and efficiency.

Vibration analysis of a system of partially-filled interconnected cylindrical shells representing a fast reactor

Anirudh Saboo et al.

Summary: The dynamics of a system consisting of three interconnected partially-filled concentric cylindrical shells are studied. The system represents a fast breeder reactor. Appropriate changes in the parameters produce results for multiple fluid-shell systems studied in the past. A parametric study shows that the natural frequencies of the system are most affected by the fluid height.

Coupled vibration analysis of partially liquid-filled cylindrical shell considering free surface sloshing

Yueyang Han et al.

Summary: In this paper, a semi-analytical method is proposed to analyze the dynamic behavior of horizontal cylindrical shells partially filled with liquid, considering the sloshing effect of the free surface. The accuracy of this method is verified, and the coupling effect between the shell's vibration and the sloshing of the free surface is revealed.

Coupled vibration analysis of partially liquid-filled cylindrical shell considering free surface sloshing

Yueyang Han et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a semi-analytical method to analyze the dynamic behavior of horizontal cylindrical shells partially filled with liquid, focusing on the sloshing effect of the free surface. By establishing coordinate systems, liquid potential functions, and coupled motion functions, the governing equations of the coupled system are obtained. The accuracy of the method is verified and the effects of parameters on the shell and the coupling effect between shell vibration and free surface sloshing are discussed.

A general approach for free vibration analysis of spinning joined conical-cylindrical shells with arbitrary boundary conditions

Qingdong Chai et al.

Summary: This paper presents a general approach for free vibration analysis of spinning JCCSs with arbitrary boundary conditions, utilizing Donnell's shell theory, artificial springs, and considering various forces. The frequency equations are derived using the Rayleigh-Ritz method, and the effectiveness of the approach is validated through numerical examples. The effects of key parameters on free vibration characteristics are also investigated.
