Summary: This study investigated the crashworthiness of hybrid composite tubes through impact testing and finite element simulation. Results revealed that the specific energy absorptions of hybrid braided tubes were higher than those of hybrid prepreg tubes, with tubes having smaller fillet radii showing higher specific energy absorptions. Additionally, hybrid braided tubes demonstrated a significant increase in crashworthiness compared to pure braided tubes.

Improving the crashworthiness of magnesium AZ31 by tapering and triggering

Robert Szlosarek et al.

Summary: This research investigates the crashworthiness of welded tubes made of AZ31 magnesium under axial impact load. It was found that using a trigger at the top end can improve crashworthiness, with a specific energy absorption of about 78 kJ/kg similar to aluminum. Additionally, the tapering principle was explored for the first time with magnesium tubes, showing effectiveness with low degree of deformation.

Energy Absorption Characteristics of a CFRP-Al Hybrid Thin-Walled Circular Tube under Axial Crushing

Rongchao Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the energy absorption characteristics of three types of thin-walled circular tubes under axial crushing, and found that the thickness and orientation of the materials significantly affect the energy absorption performance of the hybrid tube. Increasing the thickness of both materials and the number of specific plies can enhance the energy absorption capability of the hybrid tube.
