Mixed-mode load bearing estimation of the cracked additively manufactured materials using stress/strain-based models

Behnam Ameri et al.

Summary: The main aim of this study is to investigate the mixed-mode I/II failure and cracking manner of 3D-printed components made by the fused deposition modeling technique. The study uses ABS material and a modified printing method to manufacture the test samples. The results suggest that stress-based criteria are more suitable for predicting mixed-mode fracture load, and the EMC-generalized maximum tangential stress theory provides the best agreement with experimental results.

Summary: The study experimentally determined critical mode I and II stress intensity factors of three bitumen materials at low temperatures, finding that the KIIc is significantly lower than KIc for fractured asphalt binders. The ratio of fracture resistance for the tested binder materials was estimated using various failure theories, showing similar behaviors to natural solid materials.

A suitable mixed mode I/II test specimen for fracture toughness study of polyurethane foam with different cell densities

D. M. Imani et al.

Summary: Rigid foam materials can experience catastrophic failure under mechanical loads due to low fracture toughness. A suitable test specimen called Asymmetric Edge Notch Disc Bend (AENDB) was proposed for conducting mixed mode I/II fracture experiments on polyurethane foam, with finite element analyses used to determine the stress intensity factors. Experimental results showed that increasing foam density can improve the fracture toughness data for all mode mixities, while the AENDB specimen exhibited lower mixed mode fracture curves and initiation directions compared to other test samples.

Summary: This paper proposes a suitable testing method for characterizing the mixed mode tensile-shear cracking behavior of compacted soil materials and conducts related tests on clay soil materials. The experimental results indicate that the effective fracture toughness of soil is lower in the mixed mode I/II loading situation compared to pure mode I and pure mode II.

Tensile mode fracture toughness experiments on andesite rock using disc and semi-disc bend geometries with varying loading spans

Levent Tutluoglu et al.

Summary: The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of loading span on mode I fracture toughness. Mode I fracture toughness tests were conducted on specimens with different geometries, and it was found that reducing the span length and increasing the specimen thickness can increase the fracture toughness. The differences in test results for different specimen geometries can be explained by the maximum normal strain criterion.

Loading rate effect on mixed mode I/II brittle fracture behavior of PMMA using inclined cracked SBB specimen

M. R. M. Aliha et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of loading rate on the mixed-mode I/II fracture behavior of PolymethylMethacrylate (PMMA) using a novel fracture test specimen, the short bend beam (SBB). Two fracture criteria, MTS and GMTS, are employed to predict the onset of fracture and the fracture initiation angle in different loading rates. The study reveals that the critical distance (rc) and the T-stress term play important roles in the fracture behavior under different loading rates.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of E-glass fibre, ZrO2, and TiO2 nanoparticles on the fracture toughness and impact strength of PMMA denture base. Results showed that ZrO2, TiO2, and E-glass fibre reinforcements significantly improved fracture toughness and impact strength in PMMA, with 3 wt.% ZrO2 showing the highest fracture toughness. E-glass fibres were particularly effective in enhancing impact strength, while ZrO2 or TiO2 nanoparticles did not have a significant impact on impact strength in comparison to the control group.
