Split distribution, biogeography and morphological and genetic diversity of the Iberobathynellini Tribe in the family Parabathynellidae (Crustacea, Malacostraca, Bathynellacea)

Ana Isabel Camacho et al.

Summary: This article presents a modern systematic revision of the Iberobathynella group, providing information on its phylogenetic, biogeographic, and evolutionary aspects. The study reveals that molecular and morphological divergences are not always congruent, and invalidates the use of subtribe and subgenus categories. Molecular dating supports the early divergence of the Iberobathynellini tribe and the role of plate tectonics in shaping its amphi-Atlantic distribution. The existence of at least three cryptic species is confirmed.

eDNA in subterranean ecosystems: Applications, technical aspects, and future prospects

Mattia Sacco et al.

Summary: Monitoring of biota is crucial for ecosystem assessment and conservation. Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding provides a reliable molecular approach for biodiversity assessments. However, eDNA-based studies targeting subterranean ecosystems are still uncommon due to their inaccessibility and cryptic nature. Recent advances in genetic and genomic analyses offer a promising framework for exploring subterranean biodiversity and ecology.

Invertebrate traits, diversity and the vulnerability of groundwater ecosystems

Grant C. Hose et al.

Summary: Groundwater, as the largest freshwater ecosystem on Earth, offers stable environmental conditions that have shaped similar morphological and functional traits in the resident invertebrate fauna. Although the analysis of community traits has been widely used in assessing biodiversity and monitoring ecosystem status, its application to stygofauna and groundwater ecosystems is limited. This paper reviews the variation in functional traits among invertebrate fauna in groundwater ecosystems, comparing them with surface water communities. The study highlights the importance of functional traits in understanding the vulnerability of groundwater ecosystems to change.

Stygofaunal diversity and ecological sustainability of coastal groundwater ecosystems in a changing climate: The Australian paradigm

Mattia Sacco et al.

Summary: Coastal aquifers are important water sources for humanity, but current anthropogenic impacts place pressure on their sustainability. The significance of subterranean biota to ecosystem function and services is often overlooked in aquifer monitoring and management. Threats to coastal aquifers include water extraction, aridification, pollution, sea-level change, and salt water ingress. This review focuses on stygofaunal diversity, impacts, and future conservation challenges in Australian coastal aquifers, providing insights applicable globally.

An integrated approach to re-evaluate the validity of the family Leptobathynellidae (Crustacea: Bathynellacea)

Ana Camacho et al.

Summary: This study investigates the systematic status of the controversial crustacean family Leptobathynellidae using molecular and morphological methods. The analysis reveals three highly divergent clades within the family, potentially representing three distinct families.

New stygofauna from Texas, USA: three new species of Parabathynellidae (Crustacea: Bathynellacea)

A. Camacho et al.

Summary: This study describes three new species of Parabathynellidae, expands the southern range of Montanabathynella genus by over 1500 km, and adds additional populations to the molecular phylogeny. The other two new species, belonging to the genus Texanobathynella, display unique combinations of morphological features. Mitochondrial and nuclear markers support the validity of the new species and place them within a larger phylogenetic framework.

The evolution of stable silicon isotopes in a coastal carbonate aquifer on Rottnest Island, Western Australia

Ashley N. Martin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the silicon isotopic composition of fresh and saline groundwater samples from Rottnest Island, Western Australia, revealing correlations between Si-30 values and water-aquifer interactions, groundwater residence time, and local hydrogeology. The increase in Si-30 values in fresh groundwater is attributed to removal of lighter Si isotopes into secondary minerals. The findings suggest that geologically young carbonate aquifers, like Rottnest Island, may be important sources of dissolved silicon in coastal regions with low riverine input and oceanic dSi concentrations.
