Effect of prostaglandins and beta blockers on progression of hypertensive and normotensive glaucomas

Klara Maresova et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the progression of visual field changes in patients with hypertensive glaucoma (HTG) and normotensive glaucoma (NTG) following treatment with prostaglandins and beta blockers, as well as in NTG patients without ophthalmological therapy. While there was no significant difference in the effect of prostaglandins and beta blockers on HTG patients, untreated NTG patients showed the most significant visual field changes. Beta blockers showed a higher protective effect on the visual field in both HTG and NTG patients compared to prostaglandins.

Causes of blindness and vision impairment in 2020 and trends over 30 years, and prevalence of avoidable blindness in relation to VISION 2020: the Right to Sight: an analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study

Jaimie D. Steinmetz et al.

Summary: The study assessed the prevalence and relative contribution of avoidable causes of blindness and vision impairment globally from 1990 to 2020, finding that there was no change in the global prevalence of avoidable blindness and vision impairment in adults aged 50 and older. Although the age-standardized prevalence of avoidable blindness decreased, avoidable moderate and severe vision impairment did not change.

Summary: There is no definitive right answer on how to act in every specific situation, decisions must be personalized based on individual characteristics and circumstances. While seeking advice from experts is important, it's crucial to remember that expert opinions can also be fallible. Decision-making in diagnosis and treatment should always prioritize the unique patient, rather than blindly following standard recommendations.
