Hybrid thermionic-photovoltaic converter with an In0.53Ga0.47As anode

A. Bellucci et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates a thermionic-photovoltaic (TIPV) converter that utilizes both electrons and photons emitted by a hot cathode to generate electric power. By using a tungsten cathode and an In0.53Ga0.47As photovoltaic (PV) anode, the TIPV converter achieves a higher output voltage compared to a thermionic energy converter made of the same materials. Furthermore, by engineering the work function of the materials, a significant increase in output power has been achieved.

A Three-Terminal Hybrid Thermionic-Photovoltaic Energy Converter

Alessandro Bellucci et al.

Summary: Hybrid thermionic-photovoltaics (TIPV) are solid-state thermal-to-electric energy converters that rely on the non-isothermal transport of photons and electrons through a vacuum gap. By independently collecting thermionic and photogenerated currents, the maximum power generation capacity of PV and thermionic sub-devices at 1400 degrees C has been demonstrated. This proof of concept paves the way for the development of efficient hybrid thermionic and photovoltaic converters for the direct conversion of heat into electricity.

Progress Toward High Power Output in Thermionic Energy Converters

Matthew F. Campbell et al.

Summary: Thermionic energy converters have the potential for high efficiency and power density, but current prototypes fall short of the expected levels. Discrepancies are attributed to test conditions, vacuum gap distances, and material challenges. To improve performance, higher output power densities and emitter temperatures are needed.

Combined electrical resistivity-electron reflectivity measurements for evaluating the homogeneity of hydrogen-terminated diamond surfaces

V. Serpente et al.

Summary: The study investigates the homogeneity of hydrogen termination on single-crystal CVD diamond surfaces exposed to air using a combination of sheet resistance measurements and electron reflectivity measurements. The coherence between the spatial distributions of sheet resistance and electron reflectivity maps, along with their consistency with an electron energy loss analysis, shows that this combined approach provides a reliable and easy evaluation of the effectiveness and homogeneity of the hydrogen-termination process on a diamond surface.
