Addiction-Related Outcomes of Nicotine and Alcohol Co-use: New Insights Following the Rise in Vaping

Jude A. Frie et al.

Summary: Nicotine and alcohol are commonly abused substances and have significant interactions with additive and multiplicative effects on health. It is important to understand the abuse liability of their combination, especially with the rise of vaping as the primary mode of nicotine use, particularly among adolescents. Studies on nicotine and alcohol co-use are limited, especially with e-cigarettes, and this review aims to explore addiction-related outcomes and the unique aspects of e-cigarette use in the context of the vaping epidemic.

Increased mood disorder symptoms, perceived stress, and alcohol use among college students during the COVID-19 pandemic

Nora E. Charles et al.

Summary: The study found that the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the mental health of college students, leading to more symptoms of mood disorders, perceived stress, and alcohol use during the pandemic, but symptoms had largely returned to pre-pandemic levels by fall 2020. White students were more affected by the pandemic than African American students, and young adults, although less vulnerable to serious medical complications associated with COVID-19, still experienced psychological effects from the pandemic.
