Understanding interactions among climate, water, and vegetation with the Budyko framework

Guojing Gan et al.

Summary: The study provides a comprehensive review of the utilization of Budyko models in analyzing climate-catchment interactions and the influence of vegetation on the partitioning of precipitation. Findings show that vegetation characteristics and areas with low water retention capacity play crucial roles in influencing global evapotranspiration and runoff patterns, with large-scale reforestation contributing significantly to changes in annual runoff.

Evaluation of non-uniform groundwater level data using spatiotemporal modeling

Hamideh Kazemi et al.

Summary: This study utilized Spatiotemporal Regression Kriging method to derive a spatial-temporal pattern for Harvey River Catchment in Western Australia, investigated the accuracy using Leave-One-Out Cross-Validation approach, and employed time-series analysis to understand the correlation between groundwater level change and precipitation pattern. The results showed satisfactory performance of the method and consistency with previous literature, highlighting its potential for other catchments with limited groundwater data.

Climate vs. Human Impact: Quantitative and Qualitative Assessment of Streamflow Variation

Hamideh Kazemi et al.

Summary: This study utilized analytical, hydrological, and remote sensing techniques to investigate streamflow changes in the Karkheh River basin of western Iran, showing that the impacts of climate variation and regional human activities were both contributing factors. By using the DBEST algorithm, remote sensing analysis, and models, the study revealed the reasons behind the streamflow reduction and confirmed the influences of climate change and human activities on the hydrological cycle.

Untangling hybrid hydrological models with explainable artificial intelligence

Daniel Althoff et al.

Summary: In this study, explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) techniques were used to convert a 'black-box' model into a 'glass box' model, revealing the importance of considering soil moisture in hydrological models. The proposed hybrid model, which includes production storage for estimating water balance, reduces the dependencies of input variables for streamflow prediction and mitigates streamflow prediction errors.
