Mapping a Magnetic Superstorm: March 1989 Geoelectric Hazards and Impacts on United States Power Systems

Jeffrey J. Love et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between geomagnetic and geoelectric field variation, Earth-surface impedance, and operational interference on electric-power systems during a magnetic storm in 1989. The results show that anomalies were concentrated in areas with high geoelectric field amplitudes and a resistive lithosphere. Furthermore, the study suggests that future research should focus on denser geomagnetic monitoring, additional magnetotelluric surveying, and access to power-system impact data.

Comparing Three Approaches to the Inducing Source Setting for the Ground Electromagnetic Field Modeling due to Space Weather Events

Elena Marshalko et al.

Summary: This study compares the results of simulations of ground geoelectric field (GEF) and ground magnetic field using three different source models, and finds that the SECS method is more accurate in reproducing ground magnetic field perturbations compared to the MHD simulation outputs. The differences between GEF modeled using nonuniform source and plane wave approximation are substantial in Fennoscandia.

Geomagnetic Pulsations Driving Geomagnetically Induced Currents

M. J. Heyns et al.

Summary: GICs are driven by the geoelectric field induced by fluctuations of Earth's magnetic field, which are associated with large impulsive events and geomagnetic field oscillations. Low-frequency pulsations drive significant GICs, even at midlatitudes, due to the low-pass nature of GICs. Longer-period disturbances not typical of midlatitudes are observed with GIC amplitudes comparable to storm sudden commencement peak GICs.

International Geomagnetic Reference Field: the thirteenth generation

P. Alken et al.

Summary: The IAGA V-MOD working group adopted the thirteenth generation of the IGRF in December 2019, which includes definitive main field models for epoch 2015.0 and 2020.0, as well as predictive linear secular variations for 2020.0 to 2025.0. This update provides equations, spherical harmonic coefficients, and maps for magnetic parameters and their predicted changes from 2020.0 to 2025.0.
