Intense, Long-Duration Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GICs) Caused by Intense Substorm Clusters

Summary: This study analyzes the geomagnetically induced current (GIC) measurements at the Mantsala gas pipeline in Finland from 1999 to 2019. The research finds that GIC events with peak intensity above 10A do not occur as individual peaks, but cluster together with a duration ranging from about 5 to 38 hours, during which GIC values are continuously above approximately 1.5A. These intense, long-duration GIC clusters, referred to as ILG(10), have an average duration of about 17 ± 9 hours, a peak intensity of about 21 ± 10A, and a time-integrated current flow of about 1.0 ± 0.7A-d. The ILG(10) events show a one-to-one correlation with intense substorm clusters characterized by an average duration of about 20 ± 10 hours and a peak westward auroral electrojet intensity. Fluctuations in the ILG(10) events lasting from 10 to 60 minutes are found to be induced by substorm activity and geomagnetic pulsations. The study also examines the local time, solar cycle, and geomagnetic dependencies of the ILG(10) events, aiming to enhance the predictability of intense GICs.
