Neelam Khandelwal et al.

Summary: Existing conventional combined cycle power plants face challenges in power supply due to high natural gas prices and often have to remain idle or operate at part load. This study proposes an integrated solar combined cycle (ISCC) approach by combining linear Fresnel collector solar system and latent heat cascade storage system with a 328.10 MW combined cycle power plant in North India. The study analyses the performance of different integration configurations and explores the impact of using various heat transfer fluids on gas turbine operation. The results indicate that ISCC with molten salt as the heat transfer fluid achieves an efficiency of 50.87%, surpassing the performance with water by 1.51%.

The role of concentrated solar power with thermal energy storage in least-cost highly reliable electricity systems fully powered by variable renewable energy

Kathleen M. Kennedy et al.

Summary: Policies in the US are calling for the use of variable renewable energy sources that can reliably meet electricity demand despite fluctuations. However, the role of concentrated solar power (CSP) and thermal energy storage (TES) in comparison to photovoltaics (PV) and batteries in a highly reliable, 100% renewable system has not been clearly evaluated. This study finds that CSP and PV do not directly compete, but TES competes with short-duration battery storage. The coupled CSP+TES system can provide reliability in the absence of other grid flexibility mechanisms, and its adoption is primarily limited by high CSP generation costs.

Numerical investigation of the optical efficiency of a parabolic trough collector at different concentration ratios

Abdel-Farid Mamadou Idrissou et al.

Summary: The Concentration Ratio (CR) significantly influences the size and optical efficiency of Parabolic Trough Collectors (PTC), with higher CR leading to greater optical efficiency but with diminishing returns. Increasing the CR also results in an increase in rim angle, collector aperture width, and solar energy flux density around the absorber. The results of this study align well with existing literature, validating the findings on the impact of CR on PTC performance.
