Harmonic decomposition of the trace of 1D transfer matrices in media

Joaquin Garcia-Suarez

Summary: The Transfer Matrix formalism is widely used in the study of wave propagation in stratified media. The trace of the cumulative multi-layer matrix controls the dispersion relation, and its discrete spectrum plays an important role in the rational design of bandgaps.

Application of ray methods to one-dimensional site response of inhomogeneous soil deposits

Joaquin Garcia-Suarez et al.

Summary: The ray approximation technique, widely used in physics and seismology, provides an approximate analytical solution for wave propagation in a heterogeneous medium at small wavelengths. This paper applies this technique to one-dimensional site response analysis and addresses the generality of previous observations related to shear-wave velocity profile and the equivalent homogeneous properties in 1DSR.

Seismic harmonic response of inhomogeneous soil: scaling analysis

Joaquin Garcia-Suarez et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of soil inhomogeneity on seismic response, finding that the inhomogeneity factor plays a secondary role in many cases. It suggests straightforward guidelines for simplifying the problem, leading to elementary scaling relations that reveal and explain the fundamental traits of the dynamic behavior of these systems.
