Comprehensive impacts of diversified cropping on soil health and sustainability

Rebecca Baldwin-Kordick et al.

Summary: Conventional agriculture in the Midwest US lacks diversity and has negative impacts on soil and water quality. The study shows that using diverse crop rotations and incorporating livestock can improve soil health and function, leading to enhanced crop yields and reduced environmental impacts.

A cover crop and no-tillage system for enhancing soil health by increasing soil organic matter in soybean cultivation

Heppy Suci Wulanningtyas et al.

Summary: This study found that no-tillage systems and cover crop management can improve soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, exchangeable potassium-magnesium, bulk density, soil penetration resistance, and substrate-induced respiration which serve as indicators of soil health. The combination of no-till and rye cover crops appears to be a promising technique for enhancing SOC and soil health in Andisols. The melanic index values suggest that the soil is fulvic Andisols with low degree of humification, indicating that the no-till with rye system can enhance SOC and soil health.

Partial substitution of chemical nitrogen with organic nitrogen improves rice yield, soil biochemical indictors and microbial composition in a double rice cropping system in south China

Xianglin Dai et al.

Summary: Replacing chemical nitrogen with organic nitrogen is an effective method for improving soil fertility and increasing rice yield in double rice cropping systems. The organic substitution regimes significantly enhanced soil biochemical properties and rice yield.

Perenniality and diversity drive output stability and resilience in a 26-year cropping systems experiment

Gregg R. Sanford et al.

Summary: Sustainable cropping systems need to be both stable and resilient to erratic and extreme climate conditions, while also remaining profitable and providing critical ecosystem services. The study found that perennial and diverse cropping systems showed higher productivity and better stability in the face of drought, with soil health indicators positively correlated with both stability and perenniality. More diverse cropping systems exhibited greater resilience to disturbances, emphasizing the necessity of promoting perennial and diverse cropping systems for sustainable food production under increasingly erratic climate patterns.

Soil health assessment after 40 years of conservation and conventional tillage management in Southeastern Coastal Plain soils

Rongzhong Ye et al.

Summary: The study found that long-term conservation tillage can increase soil active carbon and organic nitrogen mineralization potential, but reduce soil electrical conductivity. Cover cropping has minimal impact on soil health indicators, only increasing soil total nitrogen content. Regardless of tillage practices and cover cropping, overall soil health did not show significant changes.

Soil organic carbon is affected by organic amendments, conservation tillage, and cover cropping in organic farming systems: A meta-analysis

Robert Crystal-Ornelas et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis investigates the effects of BMPs on soil health within organic farming systems, showing significant improvements in SOC and MBC concentrations. Organic amendments and conservation tillage practices have positive impacts on soil health, while cover cropping can increase SOC concentrations significantly after 5 years.
