Influence of the interfacial tension on the microstructural and mechanical properties of microgels at fluid interfaces

Jacopo Vialetto et al.

Summary: Microgels are soft colloidal particles with high potential for applications, particularly in foam and emulsion stabilization and surface patterning. By comparing organic fluid phases with different interfacial tension values, the deformation of adsorbed microgels can be adjusted, leading to varying structural and mechanical responses of the monolayers. This offers additional control to customize the 2D assembly of soft particles for fine-tuning particle size and mechanical properties.

How Softness Matters in Soft Nanogels and Nanogel Assemblies

Andrea Scotti et al.

Summary: This paper introduces methods to quantify the concept of softness in nanoscience and related parameters, and reviews the latest research on soft colloids. It also discusses the influence of different synthesis routes on the softness of nanogels, as well as the phase behavior and flow properties of concentrated nanogel solutions.

In-situ study of the impact of temperature and architecture on the interfacial structure of microgels

Steffen Bochenek et al.

Summary: This study utilized neutron reflectometry to investigate the structure and responsiveness of microgels at the air-water interface. The results revealed that temperature only affects the portion of microgels in water, while the softness of the microgels has the strongest effect on their ability to protrude into the air.

Micron-Sized Silica-PNIPAM Core-Shell Microgels with Tunable Shell-To-Core Ratio

Keumkyung Kuk et al.

Summary: This paper reports on a one-pot synthesis protocol for micron-sized silica-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) core-shell microgels and demonstrates excellent control over the shell-to-core ratio. The experimental results show that the synthesized microgels are monodisperse and suitable for optical investigations even at high packing fractions.

Interfacial self-assembly of SiO2-PNIPAM core-shell particles with varied crosslinking density

Maret Ickler et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interfacial self-assembly behavior of SiO2-PNIPAM core-shell particles as a function of crosslinker content and core size, revealing chain phases at low crosslinking densities and smaller core sizes, and rhomboid packing at higher crosslinking densities. The results are correlated with interfacial morphologies and minimum energy calculations based on Jagla-type pair potentials.

Defined core-shell particles as the key to complex interfacial self-assembly

Johannes Menath et al.

Summary: Researchers have successfully designed two-dimensional assemblies with structural complexity by utilizing the distinct interfacial morphology of soft particles. They found that core-shell particles can form complex chain and cluster structures under interfacial compression. Through a combination of experimental, simulation, and theoretical analysis, the interaction parameter of the system was narrowed down to between 0.9 and 2.

Soft Particles at Liquid Interfaces: From Molecular Particle Architecture to Collective Phase Behavior

Simone Ciarella et al.

Summary: A multiscale framework linking molecular particle architecture to interfacial behavior was developed, investigating interfacial morphologies of different particle systems and introducing a new simulation method to translate morphology into phase behavior. The method efficiently encodes multibody interactions, resolving discrepancies between experiments and simulations and demonstrating isostructural and heterostructural phase transitions. The framework serves as a bridge between soft-particle characteristics at the molecular scale and collective self-assembly at the macroscale, advancing toward a more quantitative and predictive design approach.

A sulfamethoxazole molecularly imprinted two-dimensional photonic crystal hydrogel sensor

Yunlei Cao et al.

Summary: A molecularly imprinted two-dimensional photonic crystal hydrogel sensor (SMZ-MIPCH) was developed for the sensitive and specific recognition of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ). The sensor showed a linear relationship between the variation of particle spacing and the logarithm of SMZ concentration, with a detection limit of 10(-16) mol L-1. The sensor displayed high sensitivity, specific recognition abilities for SMZ, and naked eye detection, making it suitable for SMZ detection in water samples.

Controlling microgel deformation via deposition method and surface functionalization of solid supports

Laura Hoppe Alvarez et al.

Summary: The behavior of microgels at solid-liquid interfaces is influenced by the preparation method. Through a combination of experimentation and simulation, it was found that the driving force for deformation of microgels varies depending on the surface and deposition method, and the simulated equilibrium structure is retained after rehydration.

Collapse-induced phase transitions in binary interfacial microgel monolayers

Johannes Harrer et al.

Summary: Microgels, made of swollen polymer networks, show complex self-assembly behavior at liquid interfaces. In this study, two-dimensional binary mixtures of microgels were explored at the air/water interface, revealing lattice defects introduced by minority microgel populations in the majority’s ordered phase. Under compression, the binary system exhibited three distinct solid-solid phase transitions characterized by the collapse of coronae between different-sized microgel pairs. The presence of a hierarchy in phase transitions was attributed to differences in interfacial morphology between the species, particularly the resistance provided by larger coronae.
