Cubatic structural transformation of the packing of granular cylinders

Yunhao Ding et al.

Summary: The packing structures of granular cylinders have been reconstructed using magnetic resonance imaging techniques. By controlling boundary conditions and preparation protocols, a structural transformation from a disordered liquid-like state to an orientationally ordered state with cubatic symmetry at a high packing fraction is observed. This transformation is driven by the formation of more faceted contacts that lower the elastic energy between jammed granular particles.

Compaction of bi-dispersed granular packing: analogy with chemical thermodynamics

Ching S. Chang et al.

Summary: The study of particle-packing models for bi-dispersed packings is important in the field of granular materials. Most available models are phenomenological and predict the specific volumes of a bi-dispersed packing as a function of the fraction of species. In this study, an analogy to the thermodynamic theory for chemical solutions is used to analyze the packing densities of granular mixtures, and an analytical method is proposed to predict the density of a granular mixture.

Equivalence of Fluctuation-Dissipation and Edwards' Temperature in Cyclically Sheared Granular Systems

Zhikun Zeng et al.

Summary: By analyzing particle trajectory data, we have identified two types of effective temperatures in a cyclically sheared granular system. These temperatures, obtained from different methods, show consistent results and provide experimental evidence for the validity of the concept of effective temperature in driven frictional granular systems.

Jammed disks of two sizes and weights in a channel: Alternating sequences

Dan Liu et al.

Summary: This study explores a sequence of disks with alternating sizes and weights confined to a narrow channel. The results show that under certain conditions, these disks can be jammed into specific states, which can be characterized by a small number of statistically interacting particle species. Furthermore, the study reveals a relationship between the jammed macrostates and control parameters, which are inferred from the ratios between expansion work, gravitational potential energy, and intensity of random agitations against the pistons.

Experimental Test of the Edwards Volume Ensemble for Tapped Granular Packings

Ye Yuan et al.

Summary: By using X-ray tomography, this study investigates granular packings with different friction coefficients under mechanical tapping, validating the Edwards volume ensemble and establishing a granular version of the zeroth law of thermodynamics. The research explicitly clarifies how friction influences granular statistical mechanics and determines the entropy as a function of packing fraction and friction. Furthermore, a granular jamming phase diagram is obtained based on geometric coordination number and packing fraction.

Nonequilibrium grand-canonical ensemble built from a physical particle reservoir

Jules Guioth et al.

Summary: The article introduces a nonequilibrium grand-canonical ensemble by considering the stationary state of a driven system of particles in contact with a particle reservoir. A chemical potential of the reservoir can be defined if the additivity assumption for the large deviation function of density holds, resulting in a grand-canonical distribution similar to the equilibrium one. The probability weight is renormalized by a contribution coming from the contact, illustrating formal grand-canonical potential and static fluctuation-response relations.
