Ion size effect on the diffusiophoretic mobility of a large colloidal particle

Hiroyuki Ohshima

Summary: An algorithm is proposed to calculate the diffusiophoretic mobility of a colloidal particle based on the modified Poisson-Boltzmann equation, which takes into account the ion size effects using the Carnahan-Starling activity coefficients. The proposed method is applicable when the particle size is much larger than the Debye length, allowing the particle surface to be considered as planar.

Tuning chemotactic and diffusiophoretic spreading via hydrodynamic flows

Henry C. W. Chu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the transport of chemotactic and diffusiophoretic colloids in a circular tube under hydrodynamic flow. Strong hydrodynamic flow reduces the spreading of solute-repelled colloids, while enhancing the spreading of solute-attracted colloids. The study also shows that the spreading phenomena persist for decaying colloids and reveals new regimes of anomalous spreading for chemotactic colloids, which can be tuned by hydrodynamic flows.

Diffusioosmosis-driven dispersion of colloids: a Taylor dispersion analysis with experimental validation

Benjamin M. Alessio et al.

Summary: Diffusiophoresis allows directed motion of colloidal particles in inaccessible geometries. This study investigates the dispersion of colloidal particles in a dead-end pore and develops an effective one-dimensional equation that predicts the dispersion. The model is validated through numerical simulations and experimental comparisons.

Diffusiophoresis in a Taylor-dispersing solute

Robben E. Migacz et al.

Summary: We investigate the diffusiophoresis of charged colloidal particles in the presence of nonuniform solute concentration. By comparing theoretical predictions with numerical simulations, we validate the accuracy and feasibility of the theoretical framework. The results also demonstrate that the assumption of constant particle zeta potential is valid for this system under certain circumstances.

Enhanced Accumulation of Colloidal Particles in Microgrooved Channels via Diffusiophoresis and Steady-State Electrolyte Flows

Naval Singh et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of salt contrast and groove depth on the accumulation process of colloidal particles in microgrooves, and determines the experimental conditions that lead to high particle concentration peaks. The sufficient and necessary conditions for particle accumulation are derived. The controlled and enhanced accumulation of colloidal particles in dead-end structures by solute concentration gradients has potential applications in soft matter and living systems.

Hydrodynamics of active particles in viscosity gradients

Vaseem A. Shaik et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the motion of an active particle modeled as a spherical squirmer in linearly varying viscosity fields. The active squirmer-type particle tends to align down viscosity gradients, but the rotation rate and swimming speed along the gradient depend on the details of the particle and background viscosity field interaction. The importance of local versus nonlocal effects on dynamics depends crucially on the boundary conditions imposed by the particle on the field.

Diffusiophoresis and diffusioosmosis in tandem: Two-dimensional particle motion in the presence of multiple electrolytes

Benjamin M. Alessio et al.

Summary: Research findings suggest that diffusiophoretic compaction can be increased or decreased by manipulating electrolyte combinations, total solute concentration, wall charge, and particle diffusivity. Each effect can modify particle velocity in unison or in opposition to the other effects in different ways.

Phoretic motion in active matter

John F. Brady

Summary: A new continuous perspective for phoretic motion applicable to particles of any shape in 'microstructured' fluids has been developed, explaining how the local osmotic pressure of solute adjacent to the phoretic particle generates a thrust force. The study covers passive Brownian bath particles in suspension and active particles with characteristic speed and run length variations, showing that phoretic motion arises from a gradient in swim pressure of active matter.

Confinement-Dependent Diffusiophoretic Transport of Nanoparticles in Collagen Hydrogels

Viet Sang Doan et al.

Summary: The research on nanoparticle transport in collagen hydrogels revealed a nonmonotonic behavior where maximum diffusiophoretic mobility is observed at intermediate confinement, contrary to common expectations. This behavior is attributed to the interplay between multiple size-dependent effects, highlighting the potential for enhanced nanoparticle transport in physiologically relevant conditions under tight confinement, particularly for drug delivery in compressed tissues.

Droplet migration into dead-end channels at high salinity enhanced by micelle gradients of a zwitterionic surfactant

Nan Shi et al.

Summary: High-salinity solutions were found to have negligible enhancement on the migration of oil droplets under electrolyte gradients, while non-electrolyte gradients and micelle gradients were effective alternatives. The repulsive interaction between micelles and droplets at high salinity conditions played a significant role in enhancing droplet migration. The synergistic effect of simultaneous electrolyte and micelle gradients further promoted droplet migration.
