Label-Free Identification of Exosomes using Raman Spectroscopy and Machine Learning

Ugur Parlatan et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a method that combines surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) with machine learning algorithms to classify extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from different cell lines and determine their cellular origins. This machine learning-assisted SERS method allows for label-free investigation of EV preparations and differentiation between cancer cell-derived exosomes and healthy cell-derived exosomes, offering new avenues for early detection and monitoring of diseases.

Deep Learning-Enabled Raman Spectroscopic Identification of Pathogen-Derived Extracellular Vesicles and the Biogenesis Process

Yi-Fei Qin et al.

Summary: Pathogenic bacterial infections and increasing antimicrobial resistance pose a major threat to human health. This study developed a label-free Raman spectroscopy combined with deep learning model for the rapid detection and identification of pathogen-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs). The platform enables accurate identification of EVs at different levels and provides insights into their biogenesis process, spectral markers, and bacterial origin. This will facilitate rapid diagnosis and timely treatment of bacterial infections.

Artificial Intelligent Label-Free SERS Profiling of Serum Exosomes for Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Postoperative Assessment

Yangcenzi Xie et al.

Summary: This study reports an artificial intelligent surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) strategy for accurate diagnosis and assessment of breast cancer. The deep learning algorithm trained with SERS spectra achieved a 100% prediction accuracy for different breast cancer subtypes, and when combined with similarity analysis, it can evaluate the surgical outcomes.

Diagnosis of urogenital cancer combining deep learning algorithms and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy based on small extracellular vesicles

Hongyang Qian et al.

Summary: This study compared the diagnostic capacities of serum and serum-derived small extracellular vesicles (EV) in common urogenital cancer using Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). The results showed that EV-based SERS analysis had higher diagnostic capacities than serum-based SERS analysis.

Ferroptosis-dependent extracellular vesicles from macrophage contribute to asbestos-induced mesothelial carcinogenesis through loading ferritin

Fumiya Ito et al.

Summary: The study proposed a novel mechanism in which extracellular vesicles mediate the transfer of mutagenic factors associated with asbestos to mesothelial cells. It was found that FedEVs transport iron from ferroptotic macrophages to mesothelial cells, contributing to asbestos-induced mesothelioma. Mesothelial cells receiving higher amounts of FedEVs were found to be in mitotic phases, particularly in S and G2/M phases.

Characterization of extracellular vesicles derived from mesenchymal stromal cells by surface-enhanced raman spectroscopy

Nina M. Culum et al.

Summary: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) play a role in intercellular communication through the transfer of proteins and RNA. This study used gold nanohole arrays and Raman spectroscopy to detect EVs secreted by mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) and identified compositional differences between EVs derived from different sources, achieving high accuracy in distinguishing them through logistic regression.
