Adsorption of organic and inorganic arsenic from aqueous solution: Optimization, characterization and performance of Fe-Mn-Zr ternary magnetic sorbent

Shuai-Wen Zou et al.

Summary: In this study, a Fe-Mn-Zr ternary magnetic sorbent was synthesized for efficient removal of both inorganic and organic arsenic species. The optimized sorbent showed higher adsorption capacity and the adsorption performance was affected by pH, contact time, and the presence of other anions in water. The mechanism study indicated that ion exchange and complexation were key processes in arsenic removal.

UiO-66(Zr)-derived t-zirconia with abundant lattice defect for remarkably enhanced arsenic removal

Guojuan Qu et al.

Summary: Zirconium oxide with high lattice defects, t-ZrO2, synthesized by regulating Zr-MOF UiO-66, demonstrated ultrahigh adsorption capacity towards arsenic, outperforming existing counterparts in literature. The adsorption of both As(III) and As(V) is facilitated by the mesoporous structure and lattice defect of t-ZrO2, with favorable pseudo-second-order kinetics over a wide pH range. The formation of Zr-O-As bonds on t-ZrO2 was revealed to be the main mechanism for arsenic capture, offering a new strategy for designing high-performance Zr-MOF-derived adsorbents.

Zirconium hydroxide nanoparticle encapsulated magnetic biochar composite derived from rice residue: Application for As(III) and As(V) polluted water purification

Yaru Peng et al.

Summary: A novel zirconium hydroxide nanoparticle encapsulated magnetic biochar composite (ZBC) was synthesized for the adsorptive capture of As(III) and As(V) from aqueous solutions. ZBC showed satisfactory adsorption performances to As(III) and As(V) and could be easily recycled from contaminated waters. The adsorption of As(III) and As(V) on ZBC was mainly influenced by factors such as pH, ionic strength, and presence of coexisting ions.

Activation of persulfate by magnetic zirconium-doped manganese ferrite for efficient degradation of tetracycline

Zhanmeng Liu et al.

Summary: The study developed an innovative approach for efficient removal of tetracycline in water environment by activating persulfate with oxide-based materials (ZrO2/MnFe2O4). Various factors affecting tetracycline degradation efficiency were investigated, and optimal conditions were determined. The study revealed the contributions of three radicals to rapid tetracycline degradation in the ZrO2/MnFe2O4-10/PDS system.

Confining polyacrylic acid on the surface of nanoscale zero-valent iron by aluminum hydroxide for in-situ anti-passivation

Yi-bo Hu et al.

Summary: The surface of nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) particles was coated with an aluminum hydroxide/polyacrylic acid (Al (OH)3/PAA) hybrid shell to overcome aggregation and surface passivation limitations, resulting in improved reactivity for Cr(VI) reduction. This coating provided electrostatic repulsion forces to hinder particle aggregation and thickened the reactive layer anchored on the surface for efficient reduction. XPS and TEM results indicated that the surface carboxylic groups enhanced the longevity of NZVI for surface reactions.

High-efficient removal of arsenite by coagulation with titanium xerogel coagulant

Xiaomeng Wang et al.

Summary: Titanium xerogel coagulant (TXC) showed superior performance over titanium sulfate (TS) and titanium tetrachloride (TC) under acidic conditions due to moderate pH decline during coagulation process. A dose of 10 mg Ti/L TXC could remove over 90% of As(III) at pH 7.0 and 8.0. The enhanced mechanisms involved strong adsorption ability of in-situ formed flocs and binding affinity between As(III) and hydrolysates.

Review on heterogeneous oxidation and adsorption for arsenic removal from drinking water

Ruiping Liu et al.

Summary: Long-term exposure to arsenic-contaminated drinking water has led to a global occurrence of arsenic poisoning, highlighting the importance of oxidizing As(III) to As(V) for arsenic removal. Manganese oxide serves as an effective solid oxidant that can be prepared through biological or chemical methods, holding promise as a key tool for arsenic removal.

Bram Seynnaeve et al.

Summary: A new oxygen-rich porous polymer was synthesized and successfully used as support for anchoring amorphous zirconium oxide nanoparticles. The hybrid material exhibited excellent adsorption capacities for both arsenite and arsenate, with fast adsorption kinetics. The material showed applicability in real working environments and could be regenerated continuously for arsenic desorption.

Summary: The study found that during the reaction of nZVI with arsenite, As-III gradually oxidized to As-V, with As-V becoming the dominant species in high nZVI dose systems after 60 days. The identification of transient reaction intermediate for the first time and the usefulness of in situ monitoring techniques in environmental water research were demonstrated.

Effective remediation of arsenate from contaminated water by zirconium modified pomegranate peel as an anion exchanger

Bhoj Raj Poudel et al.

Summary: Zirconium-modified pomegranate peel (SPP@Zr) was synthesized as a novel biomass-based anion exchanger for efficient remediation of arsenate from contaminated water. The material exhibited outstanding adsorption capacities for As(V) and was found very efficient at capturing arsenic far below the tolerance level in natural groundwater. The study showed that ligand exchange and electrostatic attraction played crucial roles in the adsorption of As(V) oxyanions by the synthesized material.
