Comprehensive analysis of the combined flocculation and filtration process for microalgae harvesting at various operating parameters

Bingcong Zhang et al.

Summary: The combined process of flocculation and filtration improves algae harvesting performance by overcoming their individual drawbacks. The study thoroughly examines the technical and economic feasibility of the process under various operating conditions. Dead-end filtration evaluates harvesting performance and floc changes, while cross-flow filtration assesses the effect of operating parameters on permeate flux.

Harvesting of different microalgae through 100-μm-pore-sized screen filtration assisted by cationic polyacrylamide and specific extracellular organic matter

Qijia Cai et al.

Summary: Cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) effectively harvests cyanobacteria with low dosages, but its effectiveness is limited for some green algae due to the lack of high molecular weight and negatively charged extracellular organic matter (EOM) components. High molecular weight and negative charge density of EOM are crucial factors for successful retention of microalgae.

Molecular-level composition of dissolved organic matter in distinct trophic states in Chinese lakes: Implications for eutrophic lake management and the global carbon cycle

Shasha Liu et al.

Summary: Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a crucial role in aquatic biogeochemical cycles and the global carbon cycle. This study investigates the molecular composition of DOM along a trophic gradient in 11 lakes in China. The results show that DOM from eutrophic lakes is characterized by higher molecular weight, unsaturation degree, abundance of S-containing compounds, and condensed or polycyclic aromatic compounds compared to DOM from oligotrophic lakes. In addition, nutrient input and allochthonous DOM contribute to lake eutrophication and the release of autochthonous DOM. This research provides valuable insights for future studies on DOM dynamics in eutrophic lakes.

Removal effect and mechanism of amphiphilic chitosan modified microbubbles on microcystis aeruginosa

Yonglei Wang et al.

Summary: This study successfully removed microcystis aeruginosa in lakes and reservoirs by modifying chitosan as amphiphilic material and using it as a bubble modifier. The modified chitosan showed improved water solubility but decreased thermal stability. Butyl-N-2 hydroxypropyl trimethyl chitosan ammonium chloride was the most effective modifier with an algae removal ratio of 93.47% at a dosage of 1.0 mg/L. The presence of algal organic matter enhanced the overall effect of algae removal, and electrostatic attraction was the primary adhesion mechanism.

Comparison in UV-induced photodegradation properties of dissolved organic matters with different origins

Xiaowei Fu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the UV-induced photodegradation properties of DOMs from different origins using absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy as well as FlFFF technology. Results showed that chromophoric components were more easily degraded than non-chromophoric ones, and algae-derived DOM exhibited higher degradation rate and efficiency, possibly increasing in molecular sizes during the early period of photodegradation.

Environmental controls of harmful cyanobacterial blooms in Chinese inland waters

Hai Xu et al.

Summary: Harmful cyanobacterial blooms are expanding in China's inland waters, with varying environmental factors controlling their dynamics. Shallow water bodies in China are highly susceptible to human activity and changing climatic conditions compared to deeper lakes. Rapid urbanization and industrialization, combined with climate change, have accelerated the onset and proliferation of cyanobacterial blooms in these regions.

Effective harvesting of Scenedesmus using quaternary ammonium chitosan and xanthan gum: Formation of mega flocs with oppositely charged polyelectrolytes

Qijia Cai et al.

Summary: In this study, a flocculation method and mechanism for the formation of compact mega flocs using oppositely charged polyelectrolytes HTCC and XG were developed, resulting in efficient harvesting of microalgae cells. The mega flocs were formed by the crosslinking of HTCC and XG, enmeshing Scenedesmus cells into a polymer matrix and aggregating them into large flocs. This eco-friendly and sustainable flocculation strategy reduced energy consumption and handling time for microalgae biomass separation.

Understanding variability in algal solid-liquid separation process outcomes by manipulating extracellular protein-carbohydrate interactions

N. R. H. Rao et al.

Summary: The study tested a novel modified-bubble DAF process with biomolecular additives, finding that proteins and carbohydrates play a crucial role in cell separation. Enhanced separation of up to 79% was achieved by simultaneously dosing high MW and high charge protein- and carbohydrate additives, forming protein-carbohydrate-cell suprastructures. This suggests that interactions between proteins, carbohydrates, and cells are essential for improving cell separation in the presence of a flocculant like PDADMAC.

The source apportionment of N and P pollution in the surface waters of lowland urban area based on EEM-PARAFAC and PCA-APCS-MLR

Dali Shen et al.

Summary: The study revealed that domestic wastewater and river-bottom sediments are the main sources of nitrogen and phosphorus pollution in lowland urban rivers. Under dry conditions, domestic wastewater is the primary contributor to nitrogen pollution, while sediment plays a major role in phosphorus pollution. Conversely, stormwater discharge from outlets becomes the main pollution source under wet conditions.

Harvesting of Microcystis from waterbody by flocculation and filtration: the essential role of extracellular organic matters

Qijia Cai et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of extracellular organic matter (EOM) on the removal of Microcystis using flocculation with cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) and filtration with 100-mu m filter. It found that the removal efficiency increased with the growth of Microcystis, attributed to the accumulated EOM. Additionally, the study revealed that the proportion of protein and polysaccharide in the EOM positively correlated with removal efficiency.
