Yue Zhi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the removal of emerging PFAS using nanofiltration and finds that both PFAS molecular structure and membrane characteristics significantly affect removal efficacy. The study also reveals a similarity in the driving forces for PFAS adsorption and rejection. These findings are important for the scientific community and private industry in terms of water purification and remediation of PFAS-impacted sites.

Bioaccumulation and Translocation of 6:2 Fluorotelomer Sulfonate, GenX, and Perfluoroalkyl Acids by Urban Spontaneous Plants

Yue Zhi et al.

Summary: Limited information is available on the bioaccumulation potential of polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in urban vegetation. This study investigated the bioaccumulation and translocation of select PFAS in four common urban spontaneous plants using a controlled greenhouse exposure setting. The results show that different PFAS compounds have varying bioaccumulation factors in roots and shoots, and Phyllanthus urinaria has the highest bioaccumulation capacity among the four weed species. Leaf area and average root diameter were found to be the most correlated traits with PFAS bioaccumulation factors.

Rejection of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in aqueous film-forming foam by high-pressure membranes

Charlie J. Liu et al.

Summary: The widespread use of PFASs has led to water contamination globally. High-pressure membranes like NF and RO are effective barriers to PFASs, with NF showing higher rejection rates for PFAAs and lower rejection rates in AFFF-impacted groundwater matrices. Operating conditions did not significantly impact the rejection of PFASs, except for shorter chain PFSAs, where rejection increased with flux. Structure-activity analysis showed some correlation between rejection rates and compound molecular weight, with adsorptive losses of PFAAs observed in membrane elements and systems. Despite this, NF consistently maintained rejection rates > 98% over 13 days.

Membrane-based technologies for per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) removal from water: Removal mechanisms, applications, challenges and perspectives

Tonghui Jin et al.

Summary: The removal of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) from water using membrane-based techniques has garnered increasing attention worldwide due to the widespread presence and high toxicity of these compounds. Different membrane technologies, such as direct filtration, adsorption-based membranes, and hybrid processes, have been developed to address the risk of exposure to PFASs and their environmental dispersion. The performance, treatment efficiencies, and mechanisms of these membrane processes for PFASs removal are analyzed, with a focus on the advantages, limitations, challenges, and prospects of applying these technologies in a practical and sustainable manner.

Removal mechanisms of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) by nanofiltration: Roles of membrane-contaminant interactions

Mu Li et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the roles of typical PFCs-membrane interactions in membrane adsorption and rejection, finding that electrostatic repulsion increased rejection while non-electrostatic interactions decreased rejection. The study suggests that PFCs could interact with membranes in thermodynamics, with head groups away from the membrane surface and tail groups close to the membrane surface.

Ion exchange removal and resin regeneration to treat per- and polyfluoroalkyl ether acids and other emerging PFAS in drinking water

Yen-Ling Liu et al.

Summary: Ion exchange (IX) technology shows promise in removing legacy and emerging PFAS from water. The study found that the polymer matrix of IX resins is the critical factor affecting PFAS removal, with PS-DVB resins achieving over 90% removal for 35 PFAS compounds in 24 hours. Regenerating PS-DVB resins with sodium chloride and ammonium chloride as brines, and increasing brine concentrations can enhance regeneration efficiency, especially for short-chain PFAS.

Surface modification of nanofiltration membranes to improve the removal of organic micropollutants: Linking membrane characteristics to solute transmission

Shiyang Huang et al.

Summary: Surface modification of nanofiltration (NF) membranes using polydopamine (PDA) has shown potential to enhance removal of organic micropollutants (OMs). Thicker, denser, and more hydrophilic PDA coatings resulted in reduced transmissions of target OMs, with neutral hydrophobic compounds showing lower transmissions for longer PDA coating (PDA4), and neutral hydrophilic compounds showing lower transmissions for shorter PDA coating (PDA0.5).Competing effects provided by the PDA coatings, including sealing defects and weakened hydrophobic adsorption, influenced the transmission rates of OMs. PDA4 coating demonstrated the lowest transmission for charged compounds, reducing OM transmission by 70% with minimal decline in water permeance.
