Lamb Wave Detection for Structural Health Monitoring Using a φ-OTDR System

Rizwan Zahoor et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the use of a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (phi-OTDR) sensor for detecting Lamb waves in an aluminum plate. The system is capable of detecting and distinguishing Lamb waves in different regions of the plate, opening up possibilities for structural health monitoring (SHM) and damage detection using a single optical fiber. The system is also able to reveal variations in the Lamb waves caused by changes in the plate's load conditions. Additionally, the same optical fiber can be used for distributed strain measurements. This method has the potential to replace traditional SHM sensors and offer multiple sensing points using a single fiber.
