Wearables for Running Gait Analysis: A Systematic Review

Rachel Mason et al.

Summary: This systematic review examines how wearable technology is being used for running gait analysis in adults. The majority of studies focus on young adult recreational runners and use inertial measurement units to monitor running mechanics. The outcomes measured include ground contact time, stride length, stride frequency, and tibial acceleration. Future studies should aim to establish consensus on terminology, validity testing protocols, reliability of devices, and suitability of gait outcomes.

Markerless gait estimation and tracking for postural assessment

Chuan Zhi Tay et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel markerless gait estimation and tracking algorithm for postural assessment and human motion analysis. The algorithm captures the athlete's posture using computer vision without the need for markers, resulting in less interference in physical training. Experimental results show that the system achieves high frame rate and accuracy on the Intel Up Squared Board.

Two-dimensional video-based analysis of human gait using pose estimation

Jan Stenum et al.

Summary: The author suggests that novel pose estimation algorithms can automatically track human movement for analyzing human gait, moving away from the dependence on laboratories. Their research shows that their workflow can accurately estimate gait parameters, and discusses the impact of camera viewpoint on the results.

Accurate Impact Loading Rate Estimation During Running via a Subject-Independent Convolutional Neural Network Model and Optimal IMU Placement

Tian Tan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the estimation of VALR in runners using wearable IMUs. Results show that a subject-independent CNN model with a single shank-worn IMU provides more accurate estimations compared to previous approaches. Additionally, adding extra IMUs did not improve accuracy.

Summary: Running gait assessment for shoe recommendation usually takes place in commercial settings, which may not accurately reflect natural running conditions. This can be costly and performed by untrained professionals. Low-cost assessments like using Mymo could provide a more accessible and accurate alternative.

OpenPose: Realtime Multi-Person 2D Pose Estimation Using Part Affinity Fields

Zhe Cao et al.

Summary: This work presents a real-time approach to detect the 2D pose of multiple people in an image, achieving high accuracy and real-time performance regardless of the number of people in the image. By refining PAFs separately, both runtime performance and accuracy are significantly improved. Additionally, the first combined body and foot keypoint detector reduces inference time and maintains accuracy compared to running them sequentially.
