Predicting Axial Impairment in Parkinson's Disease through a Single Inertial Sensor

Luigi Borzi et al.

Summary: This study aims to predict the postural instability/gait difficulty (PIGD) score in Parkinson's disease patients using a single inertial measurement unit (IMU) and machine-learning algorithms. Optimized support vector regression models have high feasibility in predicting PIGD scores and the performance of the models is affected by L-Dopa and freezing of gait (FOG).

Predicting UPDRS Motor Symptoms in Individuals With Parkinson's Disease From Force Plates Using Machine Learning

Trevor Exley et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of quiet standing data to predict the severity of motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease patients. The results showed that quiet standing can effectively detect body bradykinesia and postural stability, providing new tools for the diagnosis and progression of Parkinson's disease.

Axial impairment and falls in Parkinson's disease: 15 years of subthalamic deep brain stimulation

Alessandro Zampogna et al.

Summary: In this study, we found that axial impairment and falls worsened over time in Parkinson's disease patients who underwent STN-DBS surgery. Preoperative axial scores, frontal dysfunction, and age at PD onset were identified as risk factors for worsening of axial symptoms after surgery, while axial scores, akinetic/rigid phenotype, age at disease onset, and disease duration at surgery predicted frequent falls.

Early balance impairment in Parkinson's Disease: Evidence from Robot-assisted axial rotations

Alessandro Zampogna et al.

Summary: Research found that some Parkinson's disease patients without clinically overt postural instability showed abnormal reactive postural responses during axial rotations. This subclinical balance impairment was unresponsive to L-Dopa.

Detection of postural control in early Parkinson's disease: Clinical testing vs. modulation of center of pressure

Anna Kamieniarz et al.

Summary: Balance changes in early and moderate stage PD were quantified and compared to healthy controls using clinical assessments and posturography. Power spectral density of the center of pressure differentiated PD stages, indicating early balance deficits. Larger sample sizes are needed to confirm these findings.

Prediction of Freezing of Gait in Parkinson's Disease Using Wearables and Machine Learning

Luigi Borzi et al.

Summary: This study proposed a wearable system utilizing machine learning algorithms for FOG prediction, with the detection algorithm performing well in leave-one-subject-out validation. The classification algorithm for pre-FOG detection achieved high sensitivity and accuracy in leave-one-subject-out validation.

AI and Big Data in Healthcare: Towards a More Comprehensive Research Framework for Multimorbidity

Ljiljana Trtica Majnaric et al.

Summary: Multimorbidity, the coexistence of two or more chronic diseases in a person, presents unique care needs that current healthcare systems struggle to address due to their focus on single diseases. To improve patient care in these cases, a radical change in medical research and treatment approaches is required, with a shift towards interactive research supported by artificial intelligence and big data analytics.

Early Detection of Parkinson's Disease Using Center of Pressure Data and Machine Learning

Rabie Fadil et al.

Summary: This study utilized machine learning to evaluate whether different features of postural sway can differentiate Parkinson's disease patients from healthy controls. It was found that time domain features performed the best in distinguishing PD from HC. Random Forest outperformed other classifiers in terms of accuracy, false negative rate, F1-score, and precision.
