Exploring Charged Defects in Ferroelectrics by the Switching Spectroscopy Piezoresponse Force Microscopy

Denis Alikin et al.

Summary: A novel method based on switching spectroscopy piezoresponse force microscopy (SSPFM) is proposed for probing subsurface charged defects in ferroelectric materials with nanometer-scale spatial resolution. Compared with composition-sensitive methods, SSPFM shows high sensitivity to electric potential variations from charged defects. It also demonstrates the capability to evaluate dynamics of polarization screening caused by charged defects, which is of significant interest for understanding defect-mediated processes in ferroelectrics.

True Atomic-Resolution Surface Imaging and Manipulation under Ambient Conditions via Conductive Atomic Force Microscopy

Saima A. Sumaiya et al.

Summary: The atomic-scale structure and properties of material surfaces play a significant role in various chemical and mechanical phenomena. However, current methods for characterizing surfaces at the atomic level are limited by the need for strict environmental conditions. This study presents a new approach utilizing conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) to achieve atomic-resolution surface imaging under ambient conditions. The results demonstrate the capability of this method to manipulate and observe surface structure and electronics in real time, with wide-ranging applicability.

Conductivity in Ferroelectric Barium Titanate: Electrons Versus Oxygen Vacancies

M. Tyunina

Summary: The hypothesis that mobile oxygen vacancies are responsible for electrical conductivity in perovskite oxide ferroelectrics is debated. Research shows that in oxygen-deficient films, oxygen vacancies are clamped and immobile, with conductivity changes attributed to electronic processes rather than vacancy motion. This challenges the previous assumption that effects such as coloration and degradation were caused by mobile oxygen vacancies.

Summary: Lithium niobate (LiNbO3, LN) is one of the most technologically important and physically stable materials for use in domain-wall nanoelectronics. This study reveals that the CDWs in reduced LN exhibit tunable electrical conductivity and can potentially be used for mass production of CDW-based nano-electronic devices in the future.
