Science Translation During the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Academic-Public Health Partnership to Assess Capacity Limits in California

Peter Maldonado et al.

Summary: Based on an extensive academic-public health partnership, this study examines the challenge of science-policy translation by analyzing the implementation of a 20% capacity limit in retail facilities in the California Bay Area. The findings show that the intervention did not significantly reduce visits, indicating a disconnect between academic and policy metrics. The study also highlights the diminishing predictive power of mobility data over time, weakening the policy relevance of mobility-based interventions. The data suggest that a better approach for capacity limits is to focus on reducing risk during peak hours.

Coulomb threshold rate-and-state model for fault reactivation: application to induced seismicity at Groningen

Elias R. Heimisson et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on modeling induced seismicity. By revising the existing model and applying the new threshold model to the induced seismicity in the Groningen gas field in the Netherlands, the two models are compared with the observations. The results show that the new threshold model provides a better fit to the observed seismicity rate and is able to accurately predict the time variation of seismicity.

An overview of induced seismicity in the Netherlands

Annemarie G. Muntendam-Bos et al.

Summary: This article provides an overview of induced seismicity due to subsurface engineering in the Netherlands, including gas extraction, underground gas storage, geothermal heat extraction, salt solution mining, and post-mining water ingress. Small induced events are common, but larger events can potentially cause damage and undermine public acceptance. Adequate risk governance protocols, subsurface data gathering, and seismic monitoring are essential for sustainable use of the Dutch subsurface.

Earthquake hazard and risk analysis for natural and induced seismicity: towards objective assessments in the face of uncertainty

Julian J. Bommer

Summary: The fundamental objective of earthquake engineering is to protect lives and livelihoods through the reduction of seismic risk. Despite advancements in seismic hazard analysis, acceptance of hazard estimates can be hindered by invalid comparisons and resistance to new information. To achieve broad societal acceptance of risks associated with induced earthquakes, effective regulation based on sound seismological science and reliable earthquake engineering is needed.

Stress-based forecasting of induced seismicity with instantaneous earthquake failure functions: Applications to the Groningen gas reservoir

Jonathan D. Smith et al.

Summary: In this study, a new method is proposed to assess stress changes due to gas extraction and forecast induced seismicity using the Groningen gas field as a test case. The method utilizes detailed knowledge of the reservoir geometry and production history, as well as surface subsidence measurements and seismicity data. The findings suggest that the exponential rise of seismicity nearly 30 years after the onset of production provides constraints on the distribution of initial strength, and the Gaussian distribution is suitable to describe both the tail and body of the distribution. It is concluded that the presented method is computationally efficient and robust to uncertainties.

Using machine learning for model benchmarking and forecasting of depletion-induced seismicity in the Groningen gas field

Jan Limbeck et al.

Summary: This study investigates induced seismicity in the Groningen gas field in the Netherlands due to ongoing depletion, using machine learning techniques to predict seismic activity rates. By combining rock mechanical experiments and physical-statistical models, it is found that seismic forecasts generated by Support Vector Machines outperform baselines significantly.
