Avoiding abnormal grain growth when annealing selective laser melted pure titanium by promoting nucleation

Kewei Chen et al.

Summary: The study showed that appropriate control of annealing time at 700 degrees Celsius can mitigate abnormal grain growth in SLM CP-Ti, resulting in fine equiaxed grains and improved tensile properties.

Heterogeneous Aspects of Additive Manufactured Metallic Parts: A Review

G. M. Karthik et al.

Summary: Metal additive manufacturing (MAM) is a new technology for producing complex metallic parts, and understanding the relationship between thermal cycles and microstructures in MAM parts is crucial. This review covers the evolution of microstructures in MAM parts and discusses residual stresses, anisotropy, and the effects of post-MAM heat treatment.

Achieving high ductility in a selectively laser melted commercial pure-titanium via in-situ grain refinement

Jingqi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that in-situ grain refinement of CP-Ti can be achieved through controlling SLM parameters, with higher input energy density favoring grain refinement. Detailed microstructural characterization and multi-physics simulation were conducted to reveal the grain refinement mechanism. The refined CP-Ti showed high ductility without notable mechanical anisotropy, attributed to the intrinsic heat treatment effect resulting from the cyclic reheating in the SLM process.

Elimination of oxygen sensitivity in α-titanium by substitutional alloying with Al

Yan Chong et al.

Summary: Adding oxygen or aluminum individually can decrease the ductility of titanium alloys, especially at cryogenic temperatures. However, adding significant amounts of both Al and O can substantially improve both the strength and ductility of the alloy, with mechanisms involving their synergistic effects.
