Mechanical properties and microstructure evolution of cryogenic pre-strained 316LN stainless steel

Shanshan Wu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mechanical properties of 316LN stainless steel under different temperature and cryogenic pre-strain conditions. Cryogenic pre-strain improves the yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and microhardness of the material, while decreasing elongation. All samples exhibit ductile fracture, with dislocation promoted by cryogenic pre-strain and hindered by low temperatures.

Flow and fracture of austenitic stainless steels at cryogenic temperatures

P. Fernandez-Pison et al.

Summary: This paper characterizes the microstructural evolution, plastic flow, and fracture behaviors of AISI 304L and AISI 316LN stainless steels at extremely low temperatures. It demonstrates that the martensitic transformation in AISI 304L occurs faster and to a greater extent than in AISI 316LN at both 77 K and 4 K. Additionally, experimental results reveal that AISI 316LN displays higher fracture toughness than AISI 304L.

Research on Light-Weighting Mechanism of Pressure Strengthening for Austenitic Stainless Steels Cryogenic Vessels

Qunjie Lu et al.

Summary: The research found that low temperature plays a leading role in increasing strength, while prestraining at room temperature can significantly increase yield strength. Additionally, performing a 9% prestrain can enhance the uniform distribution of Vickers microhardness in welded joints. Furthermore, conducting prior PS operations on inner vessels helps prevent further plastic deformation during subsequent hydraulic tests, avoid thermal insulation degradation in vacuum jackets, and reduce stress concentrations in pipe roots, which is also of engineering significance for smooth subsequent processes such as assembly with outer containers and other product tests.

Temperature dependent deformation behavior and stacking fault energy of Fe40Mn40Co10Cr10 alloy

A. K. Chandan et al.

Summary: The variation of stacking fault energy (SFE) with temperature in Fe40Mn40Co10Cr10 high entropy alloy was experimentally evaluated, showing a transition in deformation behavior from limited twin formation and slip dominance at room temperature to mixed-mode consisting of FCC -> HCP transformation and twinning at -100 degrees C. The simultaneous occurrence of twins and deformation-induced martensitic transformation at -100 degrees C led to superior strength-ductility combination in the specimen. The increase in SFE at room temperature, despite the removal of Ni, can be understood by considering the effect of alloy chemistry re-adjustment on Delta G(gamma ->epsilon).

Research Progress of Cryogenic Materials for Storage and Transportation of Liquid Hydrogen

Yinan Qiu et al.

Summary: Liquid hydrogen is the main fuel for large-scale low-temperature heavy-duty rockets and a key focus of energy development in China. Cryogenic storage and transportation containers for liquid hydrogen play a crucial role in national defense security in aerospace and energy fields. The selection of materials for these containers is essential due to the low temperature of liquid hydrogen, and research on cryogenic materials and their low-temperature performance data is ongoing.

Grain-orientation-dependent phase transformation kinetics in austenitic stainless steel under low-temperature uniaxial loading

Runguang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the microstructural changes related to the deformation-induced transformation in 304 austenitic stainless steel were investigated using in-situ synchrotron-based high-energy X-ray diffraction technique. The analysis revealed low elastic strain in the newly formed alpha' martensite upon tensile loading, indicating the role of alpha' martensite nucleation in strain accommodation. The complex interactions of deformation and transformation were further examined through the interplay of phases and grain rotation, providing insight into the specific selection of slip systems.
