Design of pure aluminum laminates with heterostructures for extraordinary strength-ductility synergy

Xiang Chen et al.

Summary: This paper presents the fabrication of sandwich-structured pure aluminum laminates and investigates the mechanical differences resulting from microstructure heterogeneities at the hetero-interface. The annealing process is controlled to obtain a larger degree of heterogeneities, which contribute to higher tensile ductility and strength. The study also reveals the significant strain gradient and the involvement of geometrically necessary dislocations, which contribute to the hetero-deformation induced strengthening and hardening.

The influence of laser directed energy deposition (DED) processing parameters for Al5083 studied by central composite design

David Svetlizky et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of processing parameters on the characteristics of laser directed energy deposition of high-quality structural Al-based alloys. The results reveal that the powder mass flow rate has a strong influence on the deposited track's height and dilution, while the laser power and hatch spacing interaction significantly affects the track's height and dilution. The microstructure and microhardness of the deposited material are also discussed.

Crystal growth control of Ni-based alloys by modulation of the melt pool morphology in DED

Jiayun Shao et al.

Summary: It is challenging to control crystal growth pattern in additive manufacturing, especially in directed energy deposition, due to the high temperature gradient. However, by changing the power density, different melt pool morphologies and crystal growth patterns can be achieved, demonstrating the feasibility of site-specific microstructure control according to the required mechanical properties.

Engineering heterogeneous microstructures in additively manufactured high entropy alloys for high strength and strain hardenability

M. S. K. K. Y. Nartu et al.

Summary: A novel hierarchically heterogenous microstructure has been achieved in an additively manufactured (AM) high entropy alloy (HEA) by utilizing residual stresses and annealing process. This microstructure exhibits a bimodal distribution of grain sizes and differences in the morphology and scale of ordered precipitates. The micructure demonstrates excellent mechanical properties with high yield strength, strain hardening ability, and tensile ductility.

Outstanding Synergy of Superior Strength and Ductility in Heterogeneous Structural 1045 Carbon Steel

Zhengning Li et al.

Summary: The superior strength-ductility synergy of 1045 carbon steel obtained through large deformation rolling at ambient temperature and subsequent annealing was mainly attributed to the microstructure characteristics at soft/hard interfaces of the heterogeneous composite structure. This was due to the second phase reinforcement of hard cementite nanoparticles and the generation of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) around soft/hard interfaces, resulting in high work hardening capability. The cold rolled 1045 steel after annealing at 673 K for 1 h exhibited remarkable tensile strength (around 1190 MPa), high yield strength (around 1118 MPa), and good ductility (around 10.6%).

Dynamic mechanical properties of 316L stainless steel fabricated by an additive manufacturing process

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: The study utilized the cold metal transfer (CMT) process to fabricate 316L stainless steel and compared its dynamic characteristics with annealed wrought 316L, finding that CMT 316L exhibited higher yield strength and flow stress at small strains due to a special cellular structure in the matrix. The study also showed that the average twin thickness of CMT 316L decreased with the increase of strain rates during dynamic compressions.
