Public use and public funding of science

Yian Yin et al.

Summary: Understanding how science is consumed in public domains is crucial for understanding its role in society. This study examined public use and funding of science in government documents, news media, and marketplace invention. The findings reveal diverse patterns of use across different public domains, but also highlight two important forms of alignment: the public consumes impactful scientific content, and public funding is aligned with collective public use. Overall, the study demonstrates a remarkable alignment between scientific use, public use, and funding.
