Effects of postharvest methyl jasmonate treatment on persimmon quality during cold storage

Maryam Bagheri et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of methyl jasmonate (MeJA) on chilling injuries of persimmon cv. Karaj during cold storage. The results show that MeJA treatment significantly reduces chilling injuries and preserves the quality of persimmon fruit, including physico-chemical characteristics, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and electrolyte leakage level. MeJA treatment also increases antioxidant capacity and maintains total phenolic compounds. These effects are likely due to the protection of fruit membrane integrity and alteration in antioxidant enzymes' activities.

Comparison of calcium and ultrasonic treatment on fruit firmness, pectin composition and cell wall-related enzymes of postharvest apricot during storage

Mengpei Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that after calcium and ultrasonic treatment, the firmness of apricot fruit increased while juice yield and water-soluble pectin content decreased. Both treatments effectively reduced the activity of certain enzymes. Calcium treatment was more effective than ultrasonic treatment in delaying postharvest softening of apricot fruit.

Removal of astringency in persimmon fruits (Diospyros kaki) subjected to different freezing temperature treatments

Protiva Rani Das et al.

Summary: The study found that storage at -20 degrees C and -80 degrees C for up to 60 days effectively removes the astringency of persimmon fruits by decreasing proanthocyanidin concentration and altering tannin contents. The removal of astringency was accompanied by preservation of other physicochemical parameters during freezing. These findings suggest that freezing temperature treatments can aid in the removal of astringency from persimmon fruits, making them suitable for various food preparations or supplements.

Exogenous application of hydrogen sulfide and γ-aminobutyric acid alleviates chilling injury and preserves quality of persimmon fruit (Diospyros kaki, cv. Karaj) during cold storage

Zohreh Niazi et al.

Summary: Our study on the exogenous application of hydrogen sulfide and gamma-aminobutyric acid to persimmon fruit showed that treating the fruit with 3 mM NaHS or 7.5 mM GABA can effectively alleviate chilling injury, enhance fruit quality, and maintain freshness and flavor.

Effects of calcium lactate on postharvest quality of bitter gourd fruit during cold storage

Uma Prajapati et al.

Summary: The study found that using 100 mM of CL treatment can minimize physiological loss in weight and decay incidence of bitter gourd, while maintaining higher levels of firmness, total phenolics, antioxidants, and chlorophyll. Additionally, 75 mM of CL treatment can keep ascorbic acid levels high for up to 20 days, and 100 mM of CL treatment is effective in controlling PME activity and increasing inhibitory activity of alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase. Overall, the results suggest that CL treatment can significantly extend the shelf-life of bitter gourd fruits and retain important nutrients.

Effect of heat treatment on conformational and structural properties of sugar beet pectin

Afsana M. Raka et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of heat treatment on sugar beet pectin (SBP) using Ubbelohde capillary viscometry and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. It was found that heat treatment caused degradation of SBP and a decrease in viscosity with increasing temperature. Additionally, compositional changes due to heat treatment were confirmed by FT-IR analysis, which agreed with the results from capillary viscometry.
