Hops (Humulus lupulus L.) as a Novel Multipurpose Crop for the Mediterranean Region of Europe: Challenges and Opportunities of Their Cultivation

Francesco Rossini et al.

Summary: The common hop plant is primarily known for its female inflorescences used in brewing, but it also has medicinal properties. With the increasing interest in natural medicine and the growth of the craft beer sector, hop cultivation is expanding to new regions like southern Europe. However, there is a lack of complete knowledge in hop growing practices, particularly in these new environments.

Response of Hops to Algae-Based and Nutrient-Rich Foliar Sprays

Sandra Afonso et al.

Summary: This study aimed to improve the productivity and homogeneity of hop fields in northeast Portugal by using plant biostimulants as foliar sprays. The results showed that plant vigour of the plot and the year significantly influenced crop performance and tissue nutrient concentration, while foliar treatments had a lesser effect on the elemental composition of plant tissue. The use of seaweed extracts as biostimulants was effective in mitigating the stress affecting the plants, particularly under conditions of severe stress.

Vulnerability of hop-yields due to compound drought and heat events over European key-hop regions

Vera Potopova et al.

Summary: The study indicates that compound drought and heat events have increasingly severe impacts on major hop-growing regions in Europe, leading to potential reductions in hop yields, especially in higher-risk regions such as the Czech Republic and Germany.

Results from Hop Cultivar Trials in Mid-Atlantic United States

Laban K. Rutto et al.

Summary: The ‘Hop’ cultivar trials conducted in three Virginia counties revealed the significant impact of climate conditions on diseases like downy mildew and powdery mildew. The widespread infection of P. humuli was observed at all sites starting from 2017. Unusually high rainfall in 2018 led to crop failure at almost all sites.

Twenty-Years of Hop Irrigation by Flooding the Inter-Row Did Not Cause a Gradient along the Row in Soil Properties, Plant Elemental Composition and Dry Matter Yield

Sandra Afonso et al.

Summary: Flooding irrigation in hops fields can lead to significant differences in soil and plant properties, but not in a continuous gradient. Soil porosity and bulk density are related to crop productivity. The small amount of lime applied did not have a significant impact on soil and plants.
