Propyl Gallate Treatment Improves the Postharvest Quality of Winter Jujube (Zizyphus jujuba Mill. cv. Dongzao) by Regulating Antioxidant Metabolism and Maintaining the Structure of Peel

Chao Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the regulation mechanism of propyl gallate (PG) on the post-harvest quality of winter jujube fruits from the perspective of antioxidant metabolism and peel structure. The results showed that PG treatment delayed the development of peel color, improved fruit firmness and total soluble solids (TSS), increased the content of total phenols, total flavonoids, ascorbic acid (AsA), and reduced glutathione (GSH), and maintained the activity of several enzymes at a higher level. Furthermore, PG treatment reduced membrane oxidative damage and maintained the integrity of the pericarp structure. The appropriate concentration of PG has the potential to improve the storage and preservation of fresh fruits such as winter jujube.

Control of postharvest diseases in berries through edible coatings and bacterial probiotics

Janira Romero et al.

Summary: The growing world population necessitates increased resources, including food. Fresh produce such as berries are highly perishable and susceptible to contamination by pathogens, resulting in economic losses. Physical and chemical strategies, including pesticide use, have been employed to mitigate these losses. However, the negative environmental and health impacts of chemical products have led to interest in alternative control methods. Biocontrol, a novel strategy, involves the use of biological control agents such as probiotic bacteria. Probiotics act as antagonists against fungal pathogens through competition, production of secondary metabolites, and activation of plant defenses. Additionally, materials such as edible coatings with antimicrobial properties have shown promise in pathogen protection. This review compiles studies on the use of probiotics and/or edible coatings to reduce post-harvest diseases in berries.
